Key role for Bill Clinton at Democratic convention

(AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Barack Obama's re-election and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic party officials said Sunday.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role at the convention will also allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. While Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime-time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. While the number two on the ticket often speaks that night, the Obama campaign has instead decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will speak before Obama on Sept. 6, in front of tens of thousands of people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will focus on outlining many of the challenges the White House has faced over the past four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by The New York Times.

Clinton spoke at the 2008 convention, part of a healing process for the Democratic party following the heated primary battle between Obama and the former president's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, the ties between Obama and Bill Clinton have strengthened significantly. Obama has called on the former president for advice several times during his term and the two have appeared together this year at campaign fundraisers for Obama's re-election bid.

the story of our rookie years: traveling with a toddler.

Last year, we went on vacation with our then 7 month PB. It was our first vacation with our baby, and, as we imagined, it was very different. But, for the most part, it was relatively easy. Sure there was more planning and logistics involved, but overall it went pretty smoothly. PB slept a lot during travel time, and he sat like a bump on a pickle down at the beach. Easy breezy.

This year, as we were planning our vacation back to that same beach, I assumed we'd need to again plan and work out some arrangements, but I expected our trip would flow pretty easily this time, too.

Enter tip number one:

LOWER DROP ALL OF YOUR EXPECTATIONS.

We always break up our trips at Ben's dad's house. We expected him to nap on the ride down, which he did not do. So, instead, we put him to bed at 9:00 p.m., and he woke up at 12:00 a.m., thinking he'd just taken a 'nap'. He was ready to play just as Ben and I began dozing off. So, we were up all night long. Literally, we did not sleep the entire night.

We expected he'd sleep well in the car. He did not.

We expected we were taking a 'vacation'. We did not. We prefer now to call it 'quality time with family', as we 'worked' more on vacation than we do at home.

We expected that he'd sleep well on our trip. He did not. Not for 2 weeks.

We expected that he'd enjoy playing in the sand, and that we'd be able to sit still for at least 5 minutes. He did not and we did not. He preferred to run from the ocean, to the sand, and to the pool, back and forth, allllll day long.

The bottom line: drop any expectations of a vacation. I know that a vacation pre-baby is 100% different than a 'vacation' with baby. And any expectations I have of what I once knew a vacation to be are non-existent. Reading a book, whilst plopping my behind in a beach chair, and dozing off during the day= never happening again. But, it's okay. It's actually better than okay. I wouldn't trade seeing my boy squeal with excitement when a wave knocks him for anything.

Tip number two:

PLAN AHEAD FOR STOPS.

The biggest mistake we've made so far traveling with PB was trying to go from point A to point B as fast as we could, making minimal to zero stops. Bad idea. We've learned it's best for us if we plan stops to rest and play a little. When traveling this time, I did a little research while we were on the road and I planned out kid-friendly stops for us. Chick-fil-a is a must, as it's one of the only places left that has a kid area. I also scouted out the nicest rest stops I could, and we were able to get out for a while and let PB run wild in the shade. We stopped about every 2 hours and spent some energy. It made the trip so much more pleasant for all of us.

Tip number three:

PACK WISELY.

One of the unexpected joys of traveling with a baby is the amount of stuff you've gotta take. Seriously, I feel like we could pack our car full solely using PB's things. I tried to pack as lightly and condensed as I could for this trip. I used the rolling method for packing his clothes (rolling the clothes up instead of folding them), and that was a big space saver. I packed all of his necessities first (clothes, diapers, shoes, sound machine, sippy cups, etc.) and then I crammed toys and books in anywhere I could fit them. I had things stuffed everywhere, but I was able to pack more in a smaller space.

and finally,

Tip number four:

SOAK IT UP AND ENJOY IT.

There were several times on vacation that I let myself get frazzled. We'd spend all morning chasing a wild man around the hotel, trying to feed everybody, lather up in sunscreen, and haul a load of stuff down to the beach. Some days, by the time we'd get everything and everybody to the beach, we'd no sooner turn around, and we'd be coming up for lunch and a PB nap. It seemed like we spent most of our time at the beach trying to get down to the beach. I let myself get too uptight, running around trying to 'prepare' for vacation that I lost sight of why I was there: to spend time with my family, and watch my baby boy experience so many new things. Focusing on that reminds me that life is so precious and it is meant to be nothing but enjoyed.

Do you guys have any vacation traveling tips? Traveling tips for baby? Toddlers? Husbands?

Have a blessed Monday :)

When considering on where would be the most heaven-on-earth place to live, work, and play; many of us would say that Dubai is the place to go. Dubai is indeed a favorite destination for many. It lies amidst the warm sands of the Middle East, with the sun pouring down your back year round. Its sea-side location also provides cool breezes making Dubai a most comfortable place to live in. Many professionals see Dubai as the next New York or Hong Kong, with many multinational companies opening up, providing a great atmosphere to pursue a career. Shopaholics have fallen in love with Dubai?s array of retail therapy offers, ranging from the boutique to the high end. Apartments in Dubai are high in demand, with the influx of those coming into this exotic yet modern city to live permanently or temporarily. With the wide array of apartment offers in Dubai, there are certain things you would need to consider in getting the best pad for your needs. The first element to consider, and one of the most important, is the location. It is best to pick out apartments that are located conveniently, either by being near central areas, public transport, or your place of work. If it?s a breath of fresh air you are looking for, why not opt for Dubai beach apartments? With careful seeking and consideration, the perfect apartment to suit your preferences and needs is within reach. Another element of consideration, no less important than the first, is the cost of rent. Shop for apartment rents online and compare prices to find one that would not break the bank. By shifting though competitive prices and offers, you can find an apartment that is most financially accommodative without sacrificing the quality you are looking for. Dubai furnished apartments tend to cost more when compared to unfurnished apartments, but they certainly score high on convenience points and can be more economic than having to ship or purchase your own furniture upon arrival. When you are out looking for apartments in Dubai, remember to formulate a list of your needs, preferences, and budget. By keeping these elements in mind, your dream apartment in Dubai is sure to be had.

Romney on London: 'I Tell People What ? I Believe'

JERUSALEM - Mitt Romney shrugged off the suggestion he would like a do-over on his controversial comments about the London Olympics, stating that he says what he "actually believes."

He added, however, that after two days of events the games' organization has been "picture perfect."

In a wide-ranging interview with ABC News, Romney talked about his bumpy trip through London as well as assessing his prospects for debating President Obama and his moment at the Western Wall.

So far the roughest moment on the Republican presidential candidate's road trip came after he said that some things about the Olympics were "disconcerting." That angered Brits, including the mayor of London.

"You know, I was referring to press reports before I even got to London that suggested that the organizing committee was having some challenges," said Romney.

"I was there for two days," he added. "The games were carried out without a hitch. So, as far as I'm able to tell, despite the challenges as any organizing committee faces, they were able to organize games that have been so far so good, picture perfect."

"I tend to tell people what I actually believe," said Romney when asked if he would want to change his words if he could go back and answer the questions again.

The Republican presidential candidate looked ahead to his two debates with Obama this fall. He said that while he has not held any practice debates, he knows that the president was "a very effective debater in the last round."

"There's a lot that we'll do at getting prepared for these debates with President Obama," said Romney. "I think, as you suggest, they'll be very important because the rhetoric will be met with response. And if there's ever been something which is said which is untrue, the truth will come out."

"I would expect [the president] to be very effective on the debate stage," said Romney. "I don't think that it will come down to a selection of words. I think it will come down to a selection of course. What is the path America wants to follow?"

Romney shared a story about a moment he had with his wife, Ann, before the couple visited one of the holiest sites in the Jewish religion today, the Western Wall. Romney revealed that he and Ann sat together and shared the prayers they placed in the Western Wall today.

"Yes, before we went to the wall we both sat down and wrote prayers, and you know I read to her what I had written and she read to me what she wrote," said Romney.

"My thoughts were in regards to peace, my family, my wife and the source of our salvation," he said.

Pets and More Pets ? Everything You Need To Know About Dog ...

There are a number of reasons for having a pet dog. Perhaps, it was that irresistible puppy or the dog with lovable eyes! Needless to say, an obedient one is ideal. That takes training to accomplish! This article will provide some helpful ideas for doing just that!

Always remember that it takes time and patience to train a dog. Some dogs pick up things quickly, while others take longer. Each individual dog will have their own learning pace, so be sure to be aware of what your dog?s pace is. Try to be as positive as possible when working with him so that he thinks it is a fun activity to do with you and will look forward to your training sessions.

An important key to effective dog training is to always enforce the first command that you give to your dog. It is a mistake to keep repeating the command over and over again. The dog needs to learn that a command requires instant obedience. Do not give the dog the opportunity to disobey. Enforce the first command, and then promptly give a reward and praise.

Try making sure they have some activity by taking them for long walks, or if you must stay home, a long game of fetch. Your dog will be too tired out to bother digging.

If possible, position your dog?s crate next to your bed. This is a critical step in teaching him that is where you want him to sleep. Since you are still within sight he isn?t as likely to panic about having to stay in the crate for an extended period of time.

Use your pet?s name often to reinforce familiarity. It is important that your dog knows its name well, so that you can gain their attention at a moment?s notice. Reinforce their name as a positive experience using it when calling for food, treats, walks, or any activity your dog enjoys. Refrain from using their name when you are angry, or they could learn to fear it.

Training a dog is easier if the pet is neutered or spayed. Unless you are breeding the animal, taking the hormones out of the equation will greatly calm your pet. Without the constant rush of hormones, a dog is much more docile and receptive to a leader. This will also help control the pet population which is a win-win situation.

The diet you are feeding your dog needs to match their needs and activity level. The diet that is right for a working dog is a lot different from that of a dog that lounges around the house all day. Talk with your vet regarding what is right for your pup and don?t forget their needs will change as they age.

As was discussed in the beginning of this article, puppy chewing is a problem only if you do not give him something else to focus on. Apply the advice from this article on the proper way to train your puppy not to chew up your home, and soon you will see your dog finding non-destructive ways to occupy his or her time.

Online Nursing Program for You ? Reference and Education

It?s apparent that it would be tricky to stay in the nursing profession unless you were fully and totally keen about it. Usually, nurses cope with challenging shifting, long hours, end of the week work, and emotional stress. But in spite of the issues, many people embrace this career and give it their entire lives.

Even so, even though nurses commit their total lives to servicing affected individuals doesn?t mean they do not have the same goals and aspirations as other professionals. They want to improve in their positions, take on a lot more accountability, deal with squads, create ideal decisions, and enjoy better paychecks, identical to most individuals.

For registered nurses (RNs) who launch their occupations with bedside patient attention but have goals of branching out into other parts of discipline, training is the way forward. Many of these RNs earn their licenses to employ after accomplishing an associate?s degree in nursing or a hospital-administered diploma or degree. While both options give you excellent training in the specialized scale of nursing, they do not provide you with the same growth.

For most RNs, going for a sabbatical from work to get back to school full-time isn?t an option. But on account of the availability of internet nursing plans at the bachelor?s and master?s levels, they can equalize their careers and their training. Plus, several business employers furnish educative positive aspects and financed schooling for their nursing staff in order to attract and sustain talent, which can lower a registered nurses? personal financial problem of going to university.

A web-based RN-to-bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) training course is the initial step registered nurses can take in the direction of progressing in their career. A bachelor of science in nursing degree course can supply the state-of-the-art theoretical proficiency that may be needed to qualify for senior jobs.

RNs who want to make deeper inroads into their nursing education and learning after completing their bachelor of science in nursing have plenty of options to experience. From a master?s in nursing administration which leads RNs away from direct patient treatment toward managerial and administrator functions, to a master?s in nursing education and learning training course that teaches them to teach nursing, many graduate college diplomas are now available on the internet.

Do you like to become a nurse? If that is the case, why don?t you consider enrolling in an online nursing program? Visit the site for more info.

Has Image Overtaken Music? |

By WorldFamousWriter on 28 July 2012 in News with

?

(CNN)?? Is Lady Gaga an artist?

Sure, she can play piano. She?s got some songwriting talent, too. But music isn?t what comes to mind when the former Stefani Germanotta is discussed. Instead, it?s the attention-getting antics: The controversial videos. The in-your-face sexuality. The crazy concerts. The meat dress.

Is it about the music, or the Fame Monster?

Rachel Weingarten wonders.

?I don?t consider Gaga an artist,? the?New York style consultant?says, then reconsiders. ?Well, maybe she?s an artist for our time. Every generation gets the artist it deserves.?

If that?s the case, Gaga has a lot of company.

Before she was Gaga: The unseen photos

?They want to be famous, not make music,? says Lyndsey Parker, managing editor of Yahoo! Music, of some of the new breed. ?The music is just one facet of the celebrity.?

It?s an indicator of societal shifts, she says. Now you can upload a video and receive immediate fame. So much for learning three chords and working your way up the ladder.

?Now everyone expects overnight success, whether it?s because someone discovered your video on YouTube, or you went on a reality show,? she says.

Has the gimmickry gone too far? Have we become numb to the emotion and the power of music? The stuff used to be about something, dammit, not a soundalike drone of manufactured robots, lip-synching amid falling tinsel.

Right?

Art and authenticity

Well, they call it ?show business? for a reason.

Previous generations made less of a distinction between art and entertainment, observes Georgia Tech professor Philip Auslander.

?In the ?40s, and I believe well into the ?50s and the rock ?n? roll era, the idea of what it was to be a musician wasn?t as pure and pristine as we seem to want to think of it now,? says Auslander, who?s written a study of glam rock. ?The idea that to be a popular musician is not just to stand up there and show off your ability as a musician, but to entertain in other senses ? that was very much a staple of what popular music performance was about.?

Even the Beatles, who became much more decorous performers after Beatlemania hit, dominated the local scene during their Hamburg residency by turning up the volume, smashing stages and ? in a famous incident ? doing a show with?John Lennon in his underwear, wearing a toilet seat around his neck.

Of course, pop musicians have long been as much about entertainment as art ? but as times have changed, so have perceptions of where the line is drawn. To critics, MTV ? which arrived in the 1980s ? heightened?the value of looks and slickness over ?authenticity,??with the?image becoming more important?than the music. And nowadays, in our 24/7 world of rapidly posted YouTube videos, instant MP3 releases, reality shows, lurking paparazzi and meat dress one-upmanship, it?s easier than ever for spectacle to overwhelm singing.

Lady Gaga?s wardrobe ? such as the meat dress ? has sometimes overwhelmed her music.

It can be a false divide ? a glitzy video or elaborate stage show doesn?t mean the performer can?t play ? but it?s one that?s come to define some of the differences between rock and pop, says Auslander.

?I think a lot of this stuff is specific to particular genres and subgenres of music, and the old distinction between rock and pop, where the people on the pop side are not expected to be authentic in the same way as the people on the rock side,? he says.

It?s what?s led to the so-called??rockist? point of view, he adds: that rock, which was album-oriented and ranged from earnest singer-songwriters to classically inspired progressive bands, was somehow superior to pop, which was found on singles and included bubblegum, disco, easy-listening and anything else likely to make the Top 40. Nowadays the genres are more blurred, but the prejudices remain: Rock is Serious and therefore Art; pop is unserious and therefore ephemeral.

It?s a distinction that?s long been disdained by performers themselves. As the old dictum, variously attributed to Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington, states: ?There are only two kinds of music: good and bad.?

?I love a show. I want to be entertained,? says Matchbox Twenty?s guitarist, Paul Doucette, who praises the energy Lady Gaga brings to her concerts (and observes that ?she can back it up? with her talent). ?Don?t get up there and look like you?re not having a good time. I?ve seen enough of the shoegazing in my life. I want fun back in rock.?

A new road to fame

The same goes for Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, whose band has been known to put on a show themselves ? complete with avant-garde, big-screen visuals, falling balloons and a giant ?space bubble,? a transparent ball containing Coyne from which he walks over the crowd.

?That?s part of the fun of being in a rock band,? he says. ?If you?re lucky, you get to create an image.?

And as for the image overwhelming the rest of it, he points out that, if he?s done his job right, every element works together so that the band and audience are satisfied. When this interview was conducted, the Lips were about to attempt to break the Guinness world record for most live concerts in 24 hours ? an arrangement that, despite the stunt aspects, the Lips were taking as seriously as any individual show.

?People are going to pay real money, people are going to give us a lot of their time, so we don?t want it to be just hype ? it?s really got to be great,? he says. (For the record, the band?got its record.)

Coyne has an open-minded view about what characterizes ?art.?

On the Lips? latest CD, ?The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends,? the guests include such indie favorites as Nick Cave and Bon Iver, as well as Ke$ha, the ?Tik Tok? pop rapper disdained by the music press (?a faceless, anonymous pre-fabrication of a pop star,??wrote Slant?s Jonathan Keefe).

The Flaming Lips? Wayne Coyne surfs a concert crowd in his space bubble.

?I think the world can have all kinds of things in it, and just because someone is popular doesn?t mean they?re more important in people?s minds,? Coyne says. ?(The audience) should pick what they think is speaking to them the most. If that?s a Lady Gaga, great for you. If that?s an obscure little artist that you know in your hometown, use that.

?But,? he adds, ?it?s very difficult to resist the temptation of popularity. Everybody likes it. These are all dynamics everybody struggles with. What art does, it lets you be free. There should be no judgment about you in that.? He audibly shrugs. ?But this is not the way people use music in the world.?

It?s those divides ? between popular and niche, between wealthy celebrity and starving obscurity ? that keep injecting themselves into debates about music. Moreover, now that the music business has been turned upside-down by technology, musicians must find their own path to exposure (which, presumably, is still the point).

?The whole idea of a top-down market is gone,? says David Herlihy, a music and law professor at Boston?s Northeastern University.

When his own band was on the circuit in the 1980s, there was a ?road map,? he says, one that had existed for a generation.

?You needed the record label. You needed to go to the recording studio. You needed to get on the radio. You needed to be in record stores. You needed all these intermediaries. Everybody I ever became aware of followed that map,? he says. ?And now technology has completely disintermediated the business, and so now you have music and art, and people who consume those things directly. Therefore, it can go anywhere.?

The starving artist?s dilemma

It?s tremendously freeing for an artist, and also a little scary.

Do you market directly to fans, the way someone such as?Josh Rouse?does? Do you make arrangements to license your work,?the way Moby did? Do you make yourself into a brand, a la Madonna ? who?s veered so far into pure celebrity, Yahoo?s Parker says, that she and her colleagues couldn?t figure out whether to classify a Madonna story as ?music? or ?celebrity news?? Do you work with advertisers, extending your identity to other products and essentially using music as a platform to other things?

It?s not necessarily a new idea ? the Beatles, after all,?once had a clothing store?? ?a beautiful place where beautiful people can buy beautiful things,? Paul McCartney said at the time ? but the concept has reached new heights in our free-for-all age.

Paul Greco, the director of music for advertising giant JWT, is responsible for putting musicians and their songs together with advertisers. It?s a beneficial relationship, he says: the artist gets exposure and financial support, and the product gets linked up with the artist ? and the artist?s fan base. Some products can be golden for musicians: Greco mentions the ?Apple effect,? in which?the computer manufacturer made stars?of Feist (?1234?) and the Ting Tings (?Shut Up and Let Me Go?) through the use of their songs.

Spreading the word in creative ways is a necessity these days, adds Renaud Skalli, who heads up artist and label relations for the year-old marketing firm My Love Affair.

?The reason we started the firm is because the music industry was in a bad state,? he says. ?The artists needed someone on their side.?

Though musicians appreciate the exposure, the prospect of tying their fortunes to a multinational conglomerate still makes some of them nervous. It calls to mind that old hippie-punk jeer: Sell-out.

Ben Deily, a former member of the Boston post-punk band the Lemonheads, remembers when another Boston band, the Del Fuegos,?made a beer commercial. He and his bandmates were appalled, he says.

?You knew there was selling out, and then there was punk rock,? he says. (Deily now works in the advertising business.)

?Sell-out? doesn?t come up much anymore, says Greco. ?Musicians are artists. But they don?t need to be starving artists,? he says. ?You have to make a living.?

Band management

Matchbox Twenty?s Doucette has seen all sides of the equation. His band has played bars and stadiums, has been groomed by a record label and succeeded in the post-label era. Lead singer Rob Thomas has been a paparazzi magnet.

Doucette says that commercialization comes with the territory.

?A band is a brand. It sells music, it sells image, a lot of things. This is our product, this is what we do. The fact it has artistic integrity is what separates it,? he says. ?The difference is where the emphasis is.?

For Doucette, the problem arises when music isn?t the point.

?It does seem like there?s a little bit of, I want to become famous, then have a perfume line, make a record, be on a reality show. It?s more about being famous than it is about wanting to do music because that?s what you do, and then?that?opening you up to other possibilities. It depends on what your intention is.?

But, he acknowledges, these are strange times for music.

?We?re still in the Wild West of all this,? he says. ?People are still trying to figure out, how do people experience music now? There are so many different ways to do it, and how do you make that work? All these things fall into that ? the branding, the image, the importance of radio ? they?re all connected.?

In the meantime, when it comes to public tastes and media coverage, the pendulum swings forward and the pendulum swings back.

Perhaps the most successful musician of the past year is the pianistAdele, whose performing and songwriting are equally personal and unadorned ? a throwback to the early ?70s singer-songwriters, or perhaps Norah Jones and Alicia Keys. Sure, there?s been some celebrity chatter surrounding her ? she?s famously had to deal withweight issues?? but, in general, her authenticity (a word used advisedly) has worked to her advantage.

?There?s still a market for that,? says Yahoo?s Parker. ?People say rock is dead, but things always are cyclical. I do feel it will take another Nirvana, another watershed rock band, and then all these technopop artists will get scared.?

Besides, adds Doucette, if the music lasts, so will the artist who makes it.

?Eventually Lady Gaga?s not going to be able to wear the meat dress,? he says. ?But she?s not going to have a problem, because she?s been, like, I can do this. And when (she) gives you a regular song, that?s going to be as shocking as the meat dress, with her sitting there at the piano with no crazy hat on.?

This reflection by John Chuchman contains a lot of wisdom.

Thank you, John.

The more effort I put into

trying to change Institutional Church

for the better,

by writing and speaking out

against hierarchical abuse,

the more power

I gave it.

?

Anthony DeMello urged me

to overcome the enemy,

not by fighting them,

but by understanding them.

In understanding them, he said,

the problem disappears.

?

He urged me

not to try to sweep the darkness out of the room

with a broom,

but to simply light a candle.

?

The more I fought hierarchical abuse,

the more power I gave it

and the more it exhausted me.

?

If I could simply turn on the light of awareness

by understanding,

the problem for me

would dissipate.

?

When I renounced the hierarchy,

I was tied to it.

?

If I could simply see and understand

that the Institutional Feudal Monarchy

was of little importance

in the course of human spiritual growth and development,

there would be nothing to renounce.

?

I can now see

that the Institutional Feudal Monarchy

need not have any impact

on my own personal spiritual growth and development,

and so

have set myself Free Again, Free At Last!

Instant Grativacation ? Cocktail Commentary: Sweets Collection ...

Last night I had the opportunity to attend the preview party for La Cocina?s upcoming Street Food Festival. Among all the tasty food and drinks was Sweets Collection, which specializes in gelatin desserts ? including jello shots.

Jello shots may conjure up thoughts of times when drinking spiked punch out of trash cans sounded like a good idea. They just aren?t something you have once you are an adult (except in Vegas).

But Sweets Collection is turning a one-time kitschy college party favor into edible art. Using an injection technique that is common in Mexico, owner and artist, Rosa Rodriguez, creates intricate, three-dimensional designs that possess a life like quality to them.

The taste is also a bit more refined than the jello shots you might be used too. Bill Cosby may be one cool cat, and Jell-O always had that nifty jingle, but shots made with it just wind up tasting so sweet.

Rodriguez makes her shots with fresh fruits, pure sugar cane, unflavored gelatin and premium liquors (no Popov here). The result is a sophisticated shot that is almost too pretty to eat/drink!

With royalty and rock, Britain opens its Olympics

(AP) ? The queen and James Bond gave the London Olympics a royal entrance like no other Friday in an opening ceremony that rolled to the rock of the Beatles, the Stones and The Who.

And the creative genius of Danny Boyle spliced it all together.

Brilliant. Cheeky, too.

The highlight of the Oscar-winning director's $42 million show was pure movie magic, using trickery to make it seem that Britain's beloved 86-year-old Queen Elizabeth II had parachuted into the stadium with the nation's most famous spy.

A short film showed Daniel Craig as 007 driving to Buckingham Palace in a black London cab and, pursued by the royal corgis, meeting the queen, who played herself.

"Good evening, Mr. Bond," she said.

They were shown flying in a helicopter over London landmarks and a waving statue of Winston Churchill ? the queen in a salmon-colored dress, Bond dashing as ever in a black tuxedo ? before leaping into the inky night over Olympic Park.

At the same moment, real skydivers appeared as the stadium throbbed to the James Bond theme. And moments after that, the monarch appeared in person, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip.

Organizers said it was thought to be the first time she has acted on film.

"The queen made herself more accessible than ever before," Boyle said.

In the stadium, Elizabeth stood solemnly while a children's choir serenaded her with "God Save the Queen," and members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force raised the Union Jack.

Boyle sprang another giant surprise and picked seven teenage athletes for the supreme honor of igniting the Olympic cauldron. Together, they touched flaming torches to trumpetlike tubes that spread into a ring of fire.

The flames rose and joined elegantly together to form the cauldron. Fireworks erupted over the stadium to music from Pink Floyd. And with a singalong of "Hey Jude," Beatle Paul McCartney closed a show that ran 45 minutes beyond its scheduled three hours.

Organizers said the cauldron would be moved Sunday night to the corner of the stadium where a giant bell tolled during the show.

Boyle turned the stadium into a giant juke box, with a nonstop rock and pop homage to cool Britannia that ensured the show never caught its breath.

The high-adrenaline soundtrack veered from classical to irreverent. Boyle daringly included the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" and a snippet of its version of "God Save the Queen" ? an anti-establishment punk anthem once banned by the BBC.

The encyclopedic review of modern British music continued with a 1918 Broadway standard adopted by the West Ham football team, the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," by still another Queen, and other tracks too numerous to mention, but not to dance to.

The evening started with fighter jets streaming red, white and blue smoke and roaring over the stadium, packed with a buzzing crowd of 60,000 people, at 8:12 p.m. ? or 20:12 in the 24-hour time observed by Britons.

Boyle, one of Britain's most successful filmmakers, who directed "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Trainspotting," had a ball with his favored medium, mixing filmed passages with live action in the stadium to hypnotic effect, with 15,000 volunteers taking part in the show.

Actor Rowan Atkinson as "Mr. Bean" provided laughs, shown dreaming that he was appearing in "Chariots of Fire," the inspiring story of a Scotsman and an Englishman at the 1924 Paris Games.

There was a high-speed flyover of the Thames, the river that winds like a vein through London and was the gateway for the city's rise over the centuries as a great global hub of trade and industry.

Headlong rushes of movie images took spectators on wondrous, heart-racing voyages through everything British: a cricket match, the London Tube and the roaring, abundant seas that buffet and protect this island nation.

Opening the ceremony, children popped balloons with each number from 10 to 1, leading a countdown that climaxed with Bradley Wiggins, the newly crowned Tour de France champion.

Wearing his yellow winner's jersey, Wiggins rang a 23-ton Olympic Bell from the same London foundry that made Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell. Its thunderous chime was a nod to the British tradition of pealing bells to celebrate the end of war and the crowning of kings and queens, and now for the opening of a 17-day festival of sports ? London's record third as host.

The show then shifted to a portrayal of idyllic rural Britain ? a place of meadows, farms, sport on village greens, picnics and Winnie-the-Pooh, A.A. Milne's bear who has delighted generations of British children tucked warmly in bed.

But that "green and pleasant land," to quote poet William Blake, then took a darker, grittier turn.

The set was literally torn asunder, the hedgerows and farm fences carried away, as Boyle shifted to the industrial transformation that revolutionized Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, the foundation for an empire that reshaped world history. Belching chimneys rose where only moments earlier sheep had trod.

The Industrial Revolution also produced terrifying weapons, and Boyle built a moment of hush into his show to honor those killed in war.

"This is not specific to a country. This is across all countries, and the fallen from all countries are celebrated and remembered," he explained to reporters ahead of the ceremony.

"Because, obviously, one of the penalties of this incredible force of change that happened in a hundred years was the industrialization of war, and the fallen," he said. "You know, millions fell."

Olympic organizers separately rejected calls for a moment of silence for 11 Israeli athletes and coaches slain by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The parade of nations featured most of the roughly 10,500 athletes ? some planned to stay away to save their strength for competition ? marching behind the flags of the 204 nations taking part.

Greece had the lead, as the spiritual home of the games, and Team Great Britain was last, as host. Prince William and his wife, Kate, joined in thunderous applause that greeted the British team, which marched to the David Bowie track "Heroes." A helicopter showered the athletes and stadium with 7 billion tiny pieces of paper ? one for each person on Earth.

Both Bahrain and Brunei featured female flagbearers in what has been called the Olympics' Year of the Woman. For the first time at the games, each national delegation includes women, and a record 45 percent of the athletes are women. Three Saudi women marching behind the men in their delegation flashed victory signs with their fingers.

"This is a major boost for gender equality," said the International Olympic Committee president, Jacques Rogge. These are his last games as head of the IOC. He steps down in 2013 after completing the maximum two terms.

Rogge honored the "great, sports-loving country" of Britain as "the birthplace of modern sport," and he appealed to the thousands of athletes assembled before him for fair play.

"Character counts far more than medals. Reject doping. Respect your opponents. Remember that you are all role models. If you do that, you will inspire a generation," Rogge said.

The queen then said: "I declare open the games of London, celebrating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era."

Last month, the nation put on a festive Diamond Jubilee ? a small test run for the games ? to mark her 60 years on the throne, a reign that began shortly after London's last Olympics, in 1948.

Former world heavyweight champion and 1960 Rome Olympic gold medalist Muhammad Ali was cheered when he appeared briefly with his wife, Lonnie, before the Olympic flag was unfurled.

Some 8,000 torchbearers, mostly unheralded Britons, had carried the flame on a 70-day, 8,000-mile journey from toe to tip of the British Isles, whipping up enthusiasm for a $14 billion Olympics taking place during a severe recession.

The final torchbearers were kept secret ? remarkable given the scrutiny on these, the first Summer Games of the Twitter era.

The show's lighter moments included puppets drawn from British children's literature ? Captain Hook from "Peter Pan," Cruella de Vil from "101 Dalmations" and Lord Voldemort from J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, as well as Mary Poppins.

Their appearance had a serious message, too ? the importance of literacy.

"If you can read and write, you're free, or you can fight for your freedom," Boyle said.

Boyle's challenge was daunting: To be as memorable as Beijing's incredible, money-no-object opening ceremony of 2008, the costliest in Olympic history.

"Beijing is something that, in a way, was great to follow," Boyle said. "You can't get bigger than Beijing, you know? So that, in a way, kind of liberated us. We thought, 'Great, OK, good, we'll try and do something different.'"

Nissan pins Leaf's WattStation charging woes on a software bug, works on a fix

Nissan Leaf in desert

GE and Nissan had previously ruled out GE's WattStation as the cause of a few Leaf charging failures, and that story of EV tragedy looks to be winding to a close with a more definitive explanation. As the two tell us, a bug in the Leaf's on-board charging software can damage the relevant hardware under a perfect storm of conditions: if a drivers uses a specific (but not necessarily GE) charger, an undervoltage or similar power crisis can bring the Leaf to its knees. Nissan says it's hurrying towards a remedy, although we're working to confirm just what that entails. In the meantime, the automaker is asking owners to be cautious and avoid plugging in when there's lightning or brownouts in the making.

Decoding the secrets of balance

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? If you have ever looked over the edge of a cliff and felt dizzy, you understand the challenges faced by people who suffer from symptoms of vestibular dysfunction such as vertigo and dizziness. There are over 70 million of them in North America. For people with vestibular loss, performing basic daily living activities that we take for granted (e.g. dressing, eating, getting in and out of bed, getting around inside as well as outside the home) becomes difficult since even small head movements are accompanied by dizziness and the risk of falling.

We've known for a while that a sensory system in the inner ear (the vestibular system) is responsible for helping us keep our balance by giving us a stable visual field as we move around. And while researchers have already developed a basic understanding of how the brain constructs our perceptions of ourselves in motion, until now no one has understood the crucial step by which the neurons in the brain select the information needed to keep us in balance.

The way that the brain takes in and decodes information sent by neurons in the inner ear is complex. The peripheral vestibular sensory neurons in the inner ear take in the time varying acceleration and velocity stimuli caused by our movement in the outside world (such as those experienced while riding in a car that moves from a stationary position to 50 km per hour). These neurons transmit detailed information about these stimuli to the brain (i.e. information that allows one to reconstruct how these stimuli vary over time) in the form of nerve impulses.

Scientists had previously believed that the brain decoded this information linearly and therefore actually attempted to reconstruct the time course of velocity and acceleration stimuli. But by combining electrophysiological and computational approaches, Kathleen Cullen and Maurice Chacron, two professors in McGill University's Department of Physiology, have been able to show for the first time that the neurons in the vestibular nuclei in the brain instead decode incoming information nonlinearly as they respond preferentially to unexpected, sudden changes in stimuli.

It is known that representations of the outside world change at each stage in this sensory pathway. For example, in the visual system neurons located closer to the periphery of the sensory system (e.g. ganglion cells in the retina) tend to respond to a wide range of sensory stimuli (a "dense" code), whereas central neurons (e.g. in the primary visual cortex at the back of the head tend to respond much more selectively (a "sparse" code). Chacron and Cullen have discovered that the selective transmission of vestibular information they were able to document for the first time occurs as early as the first synapse in the brain. "We were able to show that the brain has developed this very sophisticated computational strategy to represent sudden changes in movement in order to generate quick accurate responses and maintain balance," explained Prof. Cullen. "I keep describing it as elegant, because that's really how it strikes me."

This kind of selectivity in response is important for everyday life, since it enhances the brain's perception of sudden changes in body posture. So that if you step off an unseen curb, within milliseconds, your brain has both received the essential information and performed the sophisticated computation needed to help you readjust your position. This discovery is expected to apply to other sensory systems and eventually to the development of better treatments for patients who suffer from vertigo, dizziness, and disorientation during their daily activities. It should also lead to treatments that will help alleviate the symptoms that accompany motion and/or space sickness produced in more challenging environments.

The research was conducted by Corentin Massot a Postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Physiology, and Adam Schneider a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Physics.

Insurance fraud must be punished ? TalkVietnam

Nguyen Hung Cuong, deputy director of the Social Insurance Implementation Department under Viet Nam Social Insurance (VSI), speaks to the Government?s online portal about increasing cases of fraud.

Do you think the recent discovery of so many forgeries has started alarm bells ringing in the VSI?

During the process of handling unemployment insurance claims, staff in some VSI offices detect a certain number of forgeries. The claims are denied and referred to the police for investigation.

However, in late 2011 and early 2012, the number of violations has been rising and spreading, particularly in big cities and industrial parks in HCM City and the neighbouring provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

I think the situation has reached an alarming level, with some organisations and individuals abusing our social insurance policy to make a profit and destabilise production.

Could you elaborate about how the certificates are forged?

There are various ways to forge insurance certificates, including photocopying an original and changing the details, among others.

In some cases, the claimants bribe people such as doctors and pharmacists to provide them with false medical certificates.

In the worse case, a company was established with the sheer objective of defrauding the VSI. The company recruited pregnant women, and labour contracts were signed by both parties to make the women eligible for maternity insurance. Once their social insurance contributions were completed, the maternity money started rolling in and was split between the company and the women.

Does this sort of behaviour undermine the VSI policy?

A huge sum of the VSI money is lost in this way, as well as overheads for expenses such as staff salaries.

In addition, it affects the rights and benefits of people who participate in the VSI.

Such bad practices have negatively impacted on social law and order and the production stability of enterprises.

Some social insurance violations have recently been punished. What are your comments on that?

I can say that with efforts from the central and local governments, the situation has improved.

Social insurance departments in provinces and cities have co-ordinated with relevant agencies to investigate alleged cases and punish them.

In Binh Duong and Dong Nai, some 1,000 fake social insurance certificates were detected, and the culprits were ordered to return the money to the social insurance fund.

What measures are needed to protect the social insurance fund?

First of all, we need to investigate, detect and punish fraudulent behaviour, ranging from issuing false documents to forging certificates.

Second, employers must abide by insurance laws and uphold their responsibilities.

Provincial/city people?s committees should co-operate with relevant agencies to step up their state management role to make sure insurance payments go to the right people. ? VNS

Commercial hub Aleppo becomes new Syria front

A commercial hub and home to 2.5 million people, Syria's second city Aleppo has become a new front in the country's 16-month uprising, after being largely excluded from the violence.

For decades, the city has been known as an industrial manufacturing base, particularly for textiles, thanks to rich cotton resources.

The major metropolis in the north of the country, it was also considered the second city of the Ottoman empire.

As a stop on the Silk Route, the city sits in a region with a strong artisan tradition, and also once served as the capital of a vast province stretching across southeast Anatolia and the plains of the Syrian north.

The city suffered the wrath of the Baathist regime in power since 1963 after an uprising led by the Muslim Brotherhood between 1979 and 1982 when many of its businessmen backed the rebellion.

But it has been able to profit from a free-trade agreement signed with Turkey in 2005, though some small local businesses in the city found themselves unable to compete with their Turkish counterparts.

Residents, known for their business sense, developed the local food and pharmaceutical industries, and focused on producing the local products for which they are reknowned, including soap, and saw trade with Turkey soar.

"Aleppo was calm because it is an industrial and commercial town that found favour with the regime after 10 years of punishment for its support for the Muslim Brotherhood during the 1980s," according to geographer Fabrice Balanche.

"The security apparatus has been very powerful since then. The rebels come from the countryside but Aleppo's residents are staying home," added Balanche, head of the Mediterranean and Middle East Studies and Research Group in Paris.

The lure of the big city as well as the search for jobs has pushed large numbers of residents of the rural region around Aleppo to move to the town, which covers some 120 square kilometres (46 square miles).

Around 45 percent of the city is made up of informal neighbourhoods, whose residents are mostly Sunnis and Kurds.

Overall, the majority of its residents are Sunnis, around 65 percent of them Sunni Arabs, and 20 percent Kurds, who are also Sunni Muslims.

Christians represent around 10 percent of the population of the city, around half of them Armenians, with the remainder from the Syrian, Greek Orthodox and Maronite churches.

Members of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad and his family belong, make up around five percent of the population.

But unlike in Damascus and the southern city of Homs, the community is not concentrated in any particular districts.

With the exception of Hamdaniyeh, home to numerous government employees, among them large numbers of Alawites, the community is dispersed throughout the city's districts, particularly its Christian quarters.

Balanche said the neighbourhoods under rebel control include the northeastern Tareq al-Bab, southeastern Salaheddin and unnamed areas where most of the population comes from Aleppo province.

The rebels do not yet control the city's central districts or those in the west, which are home to the city's elite, Christian residents, and others originally from Aleppo rather than from its outskirts.

The city's more upscale districts include Shahba, Halab al-Jadida (New Aleppo) and the city centre. Aleppo's historic Old City quarter was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1986.

Colbert To EPA Head: 'Why Do You Hate Jobs?'

Last Thursday night, EPA administrator Lisa Jackson made an appearance on Comedy Central?s "The Colbert Report? to discuss job creation, the importance of the EPA and Colbert?s childhood pet ingot, Leady.

Jackson defended her position against critics. ?Of course we want jobs,? she argued, adding that job growth should occur in a way that "ensures our kids are going be healthy.?

In fact, the EPA toxics regulations could lead "to the creation of 84,500 jobs between now and 2015," says the think tank Economic Policy Institute.

Jackson also brushed off Colbert?s facetious suggestions that burning water is ?alternative energy" and ?Cleveland could have been powered by the Cuyahoga River!?

However, when comparing the role of the EPA 40 years ago to today, Jackson was serious about the importance of the organization in the future. She specifically pointed out how environmental legislation still has a ways to go, noting that mercury regulations were only recently passed, which Jackson considered a major triumph.

In an interview with ?The Daily Show? host Jon Stewart last year, before the regulations were put into effect, Jackson discussed the need for mercury standards, arguing ?Mercury is a neurotoxin. It destroys our children?s brains before they are born.?

Only a few months later, Jackson?s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) were finalized, with the regulations set to be fully implemented by 2016.

Although a review of MATS was announced Friday, EPA officials say it is just "a routine step" with "no impact for standards already set for existing power plants," reported the Associated Press.

Jackson?s commitment to a healthy future for children extends beyond mercury regulations. The EPA recently signed a 5-year commitment between the EPA, USDA, and 1,890 universities and launched the Youth Sustainability Challenge in an effort to involve younger generations in environmental efforts.

When Colbert jokingly asked Jackson why he should care about all environmental issues (since he controls his own climate change in his Audi S5), Jackson reminded him that these regulations are about more than just a comfortable car temperature. ?The EPA is actually all about health,? Jackson insisted in the above clip. ?If (the air and the water) aren't clean, we can?t have a healthy and safe community.?
