New devices said to debut at WWDC, but no iPhone 5S in sight

MacBook Air MacBook Pro WWDC

While software is expected to take center stage at Apple?s WWDC keynote this year, a new report claims that we?ll still see some new hardware debut on June 10th in San Francisco. WWDC 2013 tickets sold out in under 3 minutes as excitement among developers boiled over, and all eyes are on iOS 7, which is expected to feature the first major user interface design overhaul iOS has ever seen. We?re not expecting any new iPhones or iPads to debut on stage at WWDC, however. Instead, KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo reports that Apple will unveil several new MacBook computers at WWDC alongside a new version of OS X that should also be shown off during the show.

[More from BGR: Samsung Galaxy S4 review]

In a research note picked up by MacRumors, Ming-chi mirrors an earlier report from Digitimes suggesting that Apple has some new notebooks in store of Q2 debuts, but they will be modest upgrades without any big changes.

[More from BGR: Cheaper iPad mini reportedly on the way]

According to the analyst, Apple will unveil new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops that are powered by?Intel?s latest Haswell processors. The bad news, however, is that the new MacBook Air is not expected to feature an upgraded Retina display, as had previously been reported.

?Contrary to our previous projection, we now think Apple will continue to make the MacBook Pro alongside the MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro because the 13? MacBook Pro remains the most popular product in the MacBook line,? Ming-chi wrote.??Also, there is still demand in emerging markets, where Internet penetration isn?t advanced, for optical disk drives.?

According to the report, the new laptops will begin shipping soon after they are unveiled at WWDC 2013.

Why you need a digital executor

Digital assets are increasingly valuable property, but only a small percentage of Americans are aware that they need to make provisions for how their heirs handle those assets. ?

By Charley Moore,?Contributor / April 28, 2013

This printout of the Facebook page for Loren Williams, now deceased, is owned by his mother, Karen Williams, who has battled Facebook over the right to view Loren?s Facebook page. This year the Oregon Legislature took up the cause, only to be turned back by pressure from the tech industry, which says they must abide by a 1986 federal law that prevents them from sharing such information.

How much do you value your digital assets ? all your e-mails, digital photos, digital music, social media accounts, and so on? Are they worth $100? $1,000? Would it surprise you that a recent McAfee survey found that Americans, on average, value their digital assets at nearly $55,000?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

That's valuable property ? on par with assets like bank accounts, stock portfolios, and irreplaceable heirlooms that people routinely plan to pass on to their heirs. Yet, only a small percentage of Americans are aware of the need to make similar provisions for their digital assets. A recent Harris survey of 2,076 adults, commissioned by my company, Rocket Lawyer, found that 93 percent of Americans with digital assets didn?t know or were misinformed about what happens to these digital assets after they die.

Without directions provided in your estate plan, your heirs could face a number of challenging questions, like:

  • What should be done with the deceased?s Facebook page and other social media accounts?
  • What should be done with personal e-mails, digital photos, and videos?
  • How can these assets be located and accessed if they?re online?

Unless there are directions left in the deceased?s estate plan, default laws will apply in the same way as with other assets. For example, everything might go to a spouse or other next-of-kin, and the people left behind will have to coordinate with third parties to retrieve any digital assets ? if they can figure out where the deceased person had these accounts.

That?s why it?s essential that your will appoint a digital executor. It could be the same person as your regular executor or someone else if, for example, your primary executor isn?t especially tech-savvy. This person makes sure your wishes are followed for these nontangible assets.

You?ll also need to make a list of your digital assets, the information you use to log in to these sites, and how you want each one managed after your death. For example, there might be personal photos you?d like to keep private. Maybe you?d like your Facebook page to be turned off because it seems morbid to leave it up once you?re gone ? or alternatively, you?d like it to stay up as a memorial to you. With clear directions and a digital executor to make sure your requests are carried out, your family is left with a plan.

Digital estate planning is a relatively new area of law, and an estate planning attorney is the best resource for making sure you get it done right. For example, it?s helpful to know whether websites allow account access to designated executors, what authorization is needed, if they can have legal permission to access online financial accounts, and whether state law requires your digital executor to reside in the same state as you.

Whatever you do, plan ahead. And create that will as soon as possible, so that things are a little easier for the people you leave behind.

Eight-core Nexus 11 and Galaxy Tab 8.0 with high-def AMOLED display detailed in leak

Nexus 11 Galaxy Tab 8.0 Specs

To compensate for the boring tablet Samsung unveiled on Monday morning, details surrounding a handful of more exciting Samsung slates have emerged in a new leak. SamMobile has a solid track record when reporting news of upcoming Samsung devices, and the blog reports on Monday that four new tablets are coming this year from the South Korea-based electronics giant. Among them are the Galaxy Tab 8.0, the Galaxy Tab 11 and the co-branded Nexus 11, which will seemingly be Google?s flagship tablet for 2013.

[More from BGR: Google Now launches on iOS]

Starting with the least interesting of the pack, Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 11 will reportedly feature an 11-inch?Super PLS TFT display, an 8-megapixel camera, a dual-core Exynos processor and microSDXC support. It?s certainly nothing to write home about, but the Galaxy Tab 11 could be an interesting play at the right price point.

[More from BGR: Google Fiber forces Time Warner?s hand yet again]

Moving on to bigger and better things ? or smaller and better, as it happens ? the Galaxy Tab 8.0 will reportedly be a new tablet sized similar to the Galaxy Note 8.0, but it will feature an AMOLED display with full HD 1080p resolution. Other rumored specs include a quad-core Exynos processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and microSDXC support.

Finally, Samsung is currently developing a follow-up to its last co-branded Nexus slate. According to the report, the Nexus 11 will feature an 11-inch?Super PLS TFT display, an eight-core Exynos processor, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and microSDXC support.

No launch details or pricing were provided in the leak, though SamMobile notes that the Tab 11 may replace the Tab 10.1 line, which hasn?t been selling very well according to the report, so pricing may be in the same ballpark.

Leak at BP platform could have caused "major accident"

By Nerijus Adomaitis

OSLO (Reuters) - Oil major BP must review the way it handles risk and maintenance at its offshore oil platforms in Norway following a leak at a North Sea platform that could have caused a major accident, Norway's oil safety watchdog said on Monday.

Last September some 1,600 kilogrammes of gas and 125 barrels of oil leaked from the production platform at the Ula field in the Norwegian section of the North Sea, a quantity considered significant by the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway.

"The incident had the potential to become a major accident, with the risk that a number of lives might have been lost and substantial material damage caused," the agency said on Monday.

The watchdog was concerned by the incident as BP had already been told to improve the way it handles maintenance at ageing platforms following a fire at the Valhall field in the North Sea in 2011.

The leak at Ula was caused by the fracturing of the bolts holding together a valve in a separator outlet. Production was shut for 67 days. No one was injured.

"The investigation has identified a number of serious breaches of the regulations, related in part to BP's management system for activities (off Norway)," the PSA said. "Deficiencies still exist in the maintenance system."

BP said it was addressing the issues raised by the watchdog. "The findings closely match BP's own investigation and work has already started to address the issues raised and to fully comply with the orders by the end of 2013," said Jan Erik Geirmo, a spokesman for BP Norway.

Ula is estimated to hold 98.8 million barrels of recoverable oil reserves, according to data from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. BP owns 80 percent of the field and is the operator. Denmark's DONG Energy holds 20 percent.

Mobile App Ratings: Teens Review Their Favorite Social Apps From ...

This article was written by teen reporters from The Mash, a weekly publication distributed to Chicagoland high schools.

By Ashley Black, St. Charles East high school, and Mikhaela Padilla, Whitney Young high school

The time of simple communication is dwindling toward extinction. Think about it: When?s the last time you called a friend from a landline phone and talked for hours? Year after year, study after study, it?s shown that teens favor communicating through social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

But now, there?s a new crop of social networking applications that are readily available to teens (aka free)?and there?s something for everyone. Want to show off a vacation photo? Instagram is your best bet. Interested in documenting your life, one check-in at a time? Path can help you with that. Or maybe you just want to send a silly selfie to your best friends? Check out Snapchat.

We rounded up some of the most popular communication apps, tried them out for ourselves and gave them report cards.

Instagram

Instagram allows its users to play professional photographer with filters, a cropping tool and focus options. Plus, you can see what your friends (and celebs) are up to through live updates.

Unlike Facebook and Twitter, Instagram is a photo-only app that banks on creativity. ?People love it because it shows a little bit of your personality and your life,? said Brianna Booth, a freshman at Barrington.

Since Instagram?s launch in 2010, heaps of knockoff apps have debuted. Still, most lack the massive following that Instagram has built.

Instagram did come under fire late last year after changing its terms of service. Users worried that the app could sell their works of art. Instagram cleared that up: You own your photos, but Instagram can share your user data with its parent company, Facebook.

Grade: A
Top marks for: user-friendly tools, creativity and cult-like following
Could improve: confusing service terms

GifBoom

In a nutshell, GifBoom is a moving Instagram. The app makes it easy to create and share your very own gifs (aka animated photographs, like the ones on whatshouldwecallme.tumblr.com). Unlike Tumblr, GifBoom only allows its users to share gifs?no still photos allowed.

One major complaint? It?s not super user-friendly at first. ?It was hard to navigate for the first week,? said Gina Paletta, a freshman at St. Charles East. ?I had no idea what I was doing and it took time to figure out.?

Once you get the hang of it, GifBoom is a unique app to have. If you?ve ever wished your Instagram photos could move, this app is for you.

Grade: B+
Top marks for: growing user base and clean design
Could improve: ease of use and tools

Pheed

If Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube had a baby (don?t ask us how), it would be Pheed. The easy-to-use, clutter-free app is quickly gaining popularity and followers. You can use Pheed to share texts, photos, videos, audio and live broadcasts.

Some would say the concept is new, but others find it repetitive. ?Facebook is all I need because other apps are basically all just the same,? said Jose Garcia, a junior at Carl Schurz.

But there is something that sets Pheed apart: Users can subscribe to premium channels for a fee (anywhere from $1.99 to $34.99 per month). For example, a singer might broadcast their performance or concert on Pheed and users would have to subscribe?and possibly pay a fee?to view it.

Grade: A-
Top marks for: clutter-free design and ease of use
Could improve: originality and premium fees

Path

If you love the idea of Facebook?s timeline, Path might just be your new favorite app. The new-ish concept allows you to share almost anything: your current location, what you?re listening to, future plans, cute stickers and more. The app also allows you to have conversations with friends (as shown above).

?Facebook and Instagram are easier to use and understand, but Path is a more minute-by-minute timeline of someone?s day,? said Brooke Rinker, a senior at St. Charles East.

One major difference between Facebook and Path is that you can have only 150 friends on Path. It creates a more close-knit feeling for many users, but some find it too restrictive.

Grade: B
Top marks for: live updating and variety
Could improve: sharing restrictions and ease of use

Snapchat

Snapchat is like nothing else on the app market. You take a photo or short video, add text or a doodle and send it to your friends to view for a set amount of time (one to 10 seconds, your choice). Once your friends open the pic, they have to press down on their phone screen to view your photo. After the timer is up, the photo or video disappears forever ? or so we?re told.

?Snapchat allows people to easily share information about their lives on a whole (different) level using photos,? said Willie Stevan, a sophomore at Whitney Young. ?I send about 15 snaps a day and receive, like, 50!?

One downfall? The privacy settings are questionable. A University of Michigan student and hacker, Raj Vir, reported that users secretly can save incoming images. Note to all: Don?t send anything via Snapchat that you wouldn?t want to resurface.

Grade: B+
Top marks for: originality and easy-to-use tools
Could improve: privacy settings

World markets climb on central bank expectations

(AP) ? World stock markets mostly rose Monday as weaker-than-expected U.S. growth added to expectations that central banks will continue easy monetary policies to support economic recovery.

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.1 percent at 6,433.02 and Germany's DAX added 0.6 percent to 7,862.89. France's CAC 40 rose 0.8 percent to 3,839.31.

Futures augured gains on Wall Street. Dow futures rose 0.3 percent to 14,694 and S&P 500 futures advanced 0.3 percent to 1,581.60.

The U.S. government said Friday that world's largest economy expanded 2.5 percent in the first quarter over a year earlier, falling short of expectations of 3 percent growth and compounding worries about the strength of global growth.

The report came after Japan said its consumer prices fell 0.9 percent in March, underlining challenges to the government's efforts to pull the economy out of a long spell of debilitating deflation. Earlier this month, China reported a slowdown in growth for the first quarter.

The downbeat reports were tempered by expectations the European Central Bank will either lower interest rates or expand financial support for the 17-country euro area at its meeting Thursday, said Lim Ho-sang, a Seoul-based economist at Samsung Futures. The U.S. growth figure also reinforced the view that the Federal Reserve won't rush to end its current policy of record low interest rates.

The easy money polices of central banks have boosted stock markets because returns on bonds and other fixed interest assets are at low levels.

In Asia, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.6 percent to 5,125.80 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng edged up 0.3 percent to 22,580.77. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.2 percent to 1,940.70. Markets in mainland China and Japan were closed for holidays.

Investors are also waiting for more data to better assess the health of the U.S. private sector as the weaker-than-expected growth of the U.S. economy largely stemmed from lower government spending. U.S. March housing sales and April employment figures are scheduled to be released this week.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 15 cents to $93.16 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 64 cents to $93 a barrel on Friday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3090 from $1.3029. The dollar fell to 97.69 yen from 98.03 yen.

Pat Healy submits Jim Miller at UFC 159, but Bruce Buffer almost announces wrong winner

Jim Miller is 5-foot-8, fights at 155 lbs., and has a bushy red beard. Pat Healy is 5-foot-9, fights at 155 lbs., and sported a trimmed red beard at UFC 159. Can you blame UFC announcer Bruce Buffer for mixing them up?

Healy, who returned to the UFC after spending much of his career in Strikeforce, put Miller to sleep with a rear naked choke in the third round of their thrilling bout. As the two stood on either side of referee Herb Dean to have the fight result announced, Buffer announced the winner by submission was Jim Mill-Pat Healy!

Healy smiled and corrected Buffer, who rarely makes such errors. It was a lighthearted moment that Healy laughed about after a thrilling bout.

Miller started out landing leg kicks and used ground and pound to beat up Healy in the first round. Near the end of the round, Healy was saved by the bell as Miller's ground and pound was close to ending the bout before the horn sounded.

[Also: Two bizarre endings mar UFC 159 prelims]

It was in the third that Healy turned the bout around. Healy weakened Miller with striking, then took him down and took his back. He sunk in the rear naked choke, and Miller's arms went limp. The fight was stopped at 4:02 in the third because Miller was out.

Miller wanted to use the bout to convince UFC president Dana White that he was ready for a title shot. Instead, it was Healy who stood out. In his post-fight interview with UFC commentator, he warned other UFC lightweights to watch out because he was "putting them on blast."

Obama to honor firefighters killed in Texas blast

By Tim Gaynor

WACO, Texas (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will assume a familiar role consoling family and friends of disaster victims on Thursday when he speaks at a Texas memorial for firefighters killed in a massive explosion at a fertilizer plant.

Just a week after he traveled to Boston following the Marathon bombing that killed three people, he will speak at a memorial on the campus of Baylor University in Waco to honor the 11 first responders who died in the blast.

Organizers expect thousands of first responders to attend the service at a college basketball arena that seats more than 10,000 people. A procession of firefighters and some 300 fire trucks from across the country will be held before the service.

The April 17 explosion at the West Fertilizer Co plant obliterated a residential section of the small Czech-American town of West, Texas, 20 miles from Waco. It killed 14 people and injured some 200.

The town of 2,700 people had 33 volunteer fireman. Five died when they responded to a fire alarm, and the plant exploded 20 minutes later. Four paramedics from nearby towns who were also firefighters, and were attending a class in West on the night of the disaster, rushed to the scene and were killed.

The other two casualties among first responders were an off-duty Dallas fireman who lived in West and a local welder who went to the plant to help.

The explosion, which had the force of a small earthquake, left a huge crater in the ground at the plant.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the blast, although they suspect an industrial accident stemming from fertilizer stored on the premises.

In addition to Obama, speakers will include Texas Governor Rick Perry and Baylor University President Kenneth Starr, best known for his investigation of the sex scandal involving then President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky during the 1990s.

The explosion occurred two days before the 20th anniversary of a huge fire that destroyed the compound of the Branch Davidian religious sect near Waco, ending a standoff with federal agents. The sect's leader, David Koresh, and dozens of his followers were killed and the government was accused of heavy-handed action in the tragedy.

Investigators of the fertilizer plant blast have not ruled out arson, but have said there is no indication of foul play.

In 1970, the People's Republic of China launched its first satellite, which kept transmitting a song, "The East is Red."

In 1980, the United States launched an unsuccessful attempt to free the American hostages in Iran, a mission that resulted in the deaths of eight U.S. servicemen.

In 1993, former African National Congress president Oliver Tambo died in Johannesburg, South Africa, at age 75.

China shut down a Beijing hospital as the global death toll from SARS surpassed 260. In Red Lion, Pa., 14-year-old James Sheets shot and killed principal Eugene Segro inside a crowded junior high school cafeteria, then killed himself.

Obama administration bypasses CISPA by secretly allowing Internet ...

Scared that CISPA might pass? The federal government is already using a secretive cybersecurity program to monitor online traffic and enforce CISPA-like data sharing between Internet service providers and the Department of Defense.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center has obtained over 1,000 pages of documents pertaining to the United States government?s use of a cybersecurity program after filing a Freedom of Information Act request, and CNET reporter Declan McCullagh says those pages show how the Pentagon has secretly helped push for increased Internet surveillance.

?Senior Obama administration officials have secretly authorized the interception of communications carried on portions of networks operated by AT&T and other Internet service providers, a practice that might otherwise be illegal under federal wiretapping laws,? McCullagh writes.

That practice, McCullagh recalls, was first revealed when Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn disclosed the existence of the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) Cyber Pilot in June 2011. At the time, the Pentagon said the program would allow the government to help the defense industry safeguard the information on their computer systems by sharing classified threat information between the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security and the Internet service providers (ISP) that keep government contractors online.

?Our defense industrial base is critical to our military effectiveness. Their networks hold valuable information about our weapons systems and their capabilities,? Lynn said. ?The theft of design data and engineering information from within these networks greatly undermines the technological edge we hold over potential adversaries.?

Just last week the US House of Representatives voted in favor of the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA ? a legislation that, if signed into law, would allow ISPs and private Internet companies across the country like Facebook and Google to share similar threat data with the federal government without being held liable for violating their customers? privacy. As it turns out, however, the DIB Cyber Pilot has expanded exponentially in recent months, suggesting that a significant chunk of Internet traffic is already subjected to governmental monitoring.

In May 2012, less than a year after the pilot was first unveiled, the Defense Department announced the expansion of the DIB program. Then this past January, McCullagh says it was renamed the Enhanced Cybersecurity Services (ECS) and opened up to a larger number of companies ? not just DoD contractors. An executive order signed by US President Barack Obama earlier this year will let all critical infrastructure companies sign-on to ECS starting this June, likely in turn bringing on board entities in energy, healthcare, communication and finance.

Although the 1,000-plus pages obtained in the FOIA request haven?t been posted in full on the Web just yet, a sampling of that trove published by EPIC on Wednesday begins to show just exactly how severe the Pentagon?s efforts to eavesdrop on Web traffic have been.

In one document, a December 2011 slideshow on the legal policies and practices regarding the monitoring of Web traffic on DIB-linked systems, the Pentagon instructs the administrators of those third-party computer networks on how to implement the program and, as a result, erode their customers? expectation of privacy.

In one slide, the Pentagon explains to ISPs and other system administrators how to be clear in letting their customers know that their traffic was being fed to the government. Key elements to keep in mind, wrote the Defense Department, was that DIB ?expressly covers monitoring of data and communications in transit rather than just accessing data at rest.?

?[T]hat information transiting or stored on the system may be disclosed for any purpose, including to the government,? it continued. Companies participating in the pilot program were told to let users know that monitoring would exist ?for any purpose,? and that users have no expectation of privacy regarding communications or data stored on the system.

According to the 2011 press release on the DIB Cyber Pilot, ?the government will not monitor, intercept or store any private-sector communications through the program.? In a privacy impact assessment of the ECS program that was published in January by the DHS though, it?s revealed that not only is information monitored, but among the data collected by investigators could be personally identifiable information, including the header info from suspicious emails. That would mean the government sees and stores who you communicate with and what kind of subject lines are used during correspondence.

The DHS says that personally identifiable information could be retained if ?analytically relevant to understanding the cyber threat? in question.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers in Congress that overwhelmingly approved CISPA just last week could arguably use a refresher in what constitutes a cyberthreat. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) told his colleagues on the Hill that "Recent events in Boston demonstrate that we have to come together as Republicans and Democrats to get this done,? and Rep. Dan Maffei (D-New York) made unfounded claims during Thursday?s debate that the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks is pursuing efforts to ?hack into our nation?s power grid.?

Should CISPA be signed into law, telecommunication companies will be encouraged to share Internet data with the DHS and Department of Justice for so-called national security purposes. But even if the president pursues a veto as his advisers have suggested, McCullagh says few will be safe from this secretive cybersecurity operation already in place.

The tome of FOIA pages, McCullagh says, shows that the Justice Department has actively assisted telecoms as of late by letting them off the hook for Wiretap Act violations. Since the sharing of data between ISPs and the government under the DIB program and now ECS violates federal statute, the Justice Department has reportedly issued an undeterminable number of ?2511 letters? to telecoms: essentially written approval to ignore provisions of the Wiretap Act in exchange for immunity.

"The Justice Department is helping private companies evade federal wiretap laws," EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg tells CNET. "Alarm bells should be going off."

In an internal Justice Department email cited by McCullagh, Associate Deputy Attorney General James Baker is alleged to write that ISPs will likely request 2511 letters and the ECS-participating companies ?would be required to change their banners to reference government monitoring.?

"These agencies are clearly seeking authority to receive a large amount of information, including personal information, from private Internet networks," EPIC staff attorney Amie Stepanovich adds to CNET. "If this program was broadly deployed, it would raise serious questions about government cybersecurity practices."

Norway wealth fund mulls selling oil firms that work in E.Guinea

By Gwladys Fouche

OSLO (Reuters) - Norway's sovereign wealth fund is looking into selling off shares in oil firms that work in Equatorial Guinea, where oil revenue does nothing to relieve abject poverty, the fund's ethics council said, a list that includes Exxon Mobil.

The Norwegian Pension Fund Global was Exxon Mobil's tenth-largest shareholder at end-2012 with some 16 billion crowns worth of shares, or a stake of 0.81 percent.

The fund, whose investments totalled $725 billion on Wednesday, invests Norway's revenues from oil and gas production for future generations. Exxon Mobil was its tenth-largest equity holding at end-2012, according to its annual report.

"We are looking into the oil companies in which we hold shares and which are active in Equatorial Guinea," Ola Mestad, the head of the fund's ethics council, said on Wednesday.

"The production of the country's dominant natural resource appears to enrich only the country's elite while the living conditions of the population are amongst the worst in the world," the council said in its annual report.

The fund has frequently excluded companies for what it deems to be unethical behaviour based on the recommendations of its ethics council.

Mestad declined to name the specific companies being considered in the case of Equatorial Guinea or say how long the process could take.

EXXON, MARATHON, HESS

A spokeswoman for Exxon Mobil in Norway confirmed the company was active in Equatorial Guinea and that statements she had made to a local daily newspaper were correct.

"To operate honestly and ethically is one of the most important things that we do," spokeswoman Kristin Kragseth was cited as saying by the Aftenposten on Wednesday.

"Regardless of where we are in the world, it is important to us to maintain high ethical standards, follow rules and regulations and respects local culture. We do that in Equatorial Guinea as we do in Norway and all the other countries we operate in."

Kragseth did not immediately respond to requests for further comment, and U.S. Exxon officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

U.S. energy companies Marathon Oil and Hess Corp also operate fields in Equatorial Guinea. The oil fund owned 0.76 percent of Marathon Oil and 0.69 percent of Hess at the end of 2012, according to Reuters data.

Officials at both Marathon Oil and Hess could not immediately be reached for comment.

Equatorial Guinea is nominally one of Africa's richest countries with a GDP per capita of more than $27,000 per year, according to the World Bank, putting it ahead of Portugal and just below Spain. Even so, much of the 720,000 population lives in deep poverty.

The country was ranked among "the worst of the worst" civil liberty abusers in a 2012 survey by democracy group Freedom House. President Teodor Obiang Nguema has been in power in the tiny central African state for more than three decades, and his son is wanted in both the United States and France on corruption charges.

The Norwegian fund's ethics council makes its recommendations to Norway's finance ministry, which has ultimate responsibility for the fund.

The fund last excluded The Babcock & Wilcox Co. and Jacobs Engineering Group Plc in January, citing their involvement in the production of nuclear weapons.

April 19-21 Miramonte Public Speaking and Debate attended the 2013 state championships in Santa Clarita, California. This year 34 students qualified for the championships in different events. One Matador came home a state champion, ten came home as finalists, and fifteen were semi-finalists.

In Congressional Debate, Senior Charles Correll III took first place. ?It feels exceptional to win the whole thing. Such an accomplishment is a testament to how far hard work and determination can take a man,? Correll said.

?I?m most overjoyed for Mrs. Plant though, who has been fighting for years to have a state champion. It?s an honor to be her first in congressional debate,? said Correll. This summer Correll will be attending Nationals in Birmingham, Alabama.

The awards in congress didn?t stop there. Junior Ethan Miles took second place, junior Connor Meckfessel took fourth, senior Erik Mcdonald placed fifth, and senior George Kaiser took seventh. Senior Jimmy McFeely won best Presiding Officer.

?I learned after the semifinal round that I was winning the tournament through prelims and that was definitely a confidence boost. That knowledge let me breathe easy and just go in and have fun,? Miles said. Meckfessel will be joining Correll in congress at Nationals, along with Miles who will be competing in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Senior Nick Oliver placed second in expository speaking. ?Placing second at the State Championships in Expository affirmed for me that hard work and undying motivation for excellence truly do pay off,? said Oliver.

To top off a solid victory, senior Brian De luna placed fifth in Original Oratory, and junior Jonah Lowenstien placed sixth in Humorous Interpretation. In Thematic Interpretation senior Gina Nerone placed seventh, while junior Daniel Galarza took home fourth place.

To qualify for state, students must compete in a debate and individual event qualifier. The top seven speakers advance to the state championships in Individual Events, while the top 12 advance to state in Congress.

According to a Miramonte Public Speaking Twitter update, ?2013 has been MHS Public Speaking?s most successful State Tournament in the last 5 years,? tweeted Debate Coach Kristin Plant.

The victory for most public speakers is bittersweet. ?I could have not asked for a better way to end my four year career as a Miramonte Public Speaker, not only due to success but also because of the support, dedication, and victories of the Pub family that I am so proud to be a part of,? Oliver said.

Epilepsy drug in pregnancy tied to autism risk

    By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who take the epilepsy drug valproate during pregnancy are three times more likely to have a child with an autism spectrum disorder, suggests new research based on close to 700,000 babies born in Denmark.

Previous studies have found more birth defects and lower intelligence among children of mothers who took valproate, but the new work represents the "strongest evidence to date" of a link between the drug and autism, according to an editorial published with the study on Tuesday.

The results don't prove the generic drug, also sold as valproic acid, causes autism. But researchers were able to account for a number of underlying factors - such as the age and health of the mothers and the babies' fathers - that make the study more convincing, Christopher Stodgell said.

"This finding isn't necessarily a brand new finding, but it's an important finding in that (researchers studied) really a much larger population, and they also looked at some other underlying drivers," said Stodgell, who studies the origins of autism at the University of Rochester Medical Center but wasn't involved in the new research.

Women "need to be very diligent about what the effects are if they're taking valproic acid," he told Reuters Health.

About one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those conditions range from autism itself to less disabling ones such as Asperger's syndrome.

For the new study, researchers tracked 656,000 kids born in Denmark between 1996 and 2006. Using a large prescription drug database, they found that just under 6,600 of the mothers of those children had epilepsy and 508 women took valproate while pregnant.

By 2010, 4.4 percent of the kids whose mothers had taken valproate during pregnancy were diagnosed with any ASD, including 2.5 percent with autism.

In contrast, 1.5 percent of all babies in the study had an ASD and 0.5 percent had autism, the study team reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Mothers' underlying epilepsy didn't fully explain the link, according to Jakob Christensen from Aarhus University and his colleagues. In addition, autism rates were higher among children of women who used valproate during pregnancy than those who had previously used the drug but stopped before conceiving.

    CONSIDER RISKS, BENEFITS

"Valproate is an effective drug, but it appears that it is being prescribed for women of childbearing potential at a rate that does not fully consider the ratio of benefits to risks," wrote Dr. Kimford Meador and David Loring from Emory University in Atlanta, in a linked editorial.

Valproate could affect maturation of a fetus's brain, Christensen suggested, including the signal-sending neurotransmitters.

Women who may become pregnant "certainly should discuss with their doctor if there are alternative treatments that would be reasonable," he told Reuters Health.

For those with certain syndromes or generalized epilepsy, there aren't necessarily other good options. Stopping valproate in that case isn't a good idea, Christensen said.

"It's also a risk if you have seizures, both for the mother and the unborn child. (Stopping medication) is not a thing that you take lightly," he said.

"Even those that are exposed to this drug, there's still a good chance - more than a 95-percent chance - that their child will never develop signs of autism."

The study didn't take into account whether women drank during pregnancy, or if they took folic acid - which has been tied to a lower risk of some birth defects.

Christensen said there are steps pregnant women on valproate can take to lower any risks to their baby, such as using the lowest possible dose and dividing it up during the day.

Secondgen Nest teardown reveals highdegree of repairability, fun with curved glass

Chances are if you've bought a $250 thermostat you aren't going to immediately rip it apart to see what makes it tick. Thankfully, there are folks like iFixit that do these sorts of things for us, and they've now finally done the honors with Nest's second-generation unit. As with the original model, there's an ARM Cortex A8 CPU powering things inside, and iFixit is especially impressed with the ease of access to the replaceable battery and other components; only some adhesive holding the front assembly together proved a tad difficult, which it says could complicate matters if you need to replace the screen or front glass. If you do take it off, though, iFixit notes that the curved glass can also double as a handy magnifying glass. Hit the source link below for the full step-by-step account.
