Armstrong: Truth & reconciliation is 'only way'

LONDON (AP) ? A truth and reconciliation program is the "only way" to rid cycling of performance-enhancing drugs, and the sport's governing body should have no role in the process, Lance Armstrong said in an interview with a British publication.

Cyclingnews on Wednesday published questions and answers it exchanged with Armstrong through emails and texts. In an interview two weeks ago with Oprah Winfrey, the cyclist acknowledged for the first time that he doped to win a record seven Tour de France titles.

Armstrong said no generation was ever "clean," and the best way forward is a truth and reconciliation process offering amnesty to riders and officials who detail doping in the sport.

"It's not the best way, it's the only way," he said. "As much as I'm the eye of the storm this is not about one man, one team, one director. This is about cycling and to be frank it's about all endurance sports.

"Publicly lynching one man and his team will not solve this problem."

Asked if he felt like a fall guy, Armstrong said: "Actually, yes I do. But I understand why. We all make the beds we sleep in."

In his interview with Winfrey, Armstrong said he would be willing to take part in any truth and reconciliation process.

He told Cyclingnews the program should be run by the World Anti-Doping Agency and not the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the body which produced a scathing report detailing systematic doping by Armstrong and his teams. The USADA report led to Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour titles and banned from elite sport for life.

Asked why he would not speak to USADA, Armstrong said: "No brainer. This is a global sport not an American one."

He also insisted that international cycling body UCI and its president, Pat McQuaid, should not be involved.

"The UCI has no place at the table," Armstrong said.

He called McQuaid "pathetic" and said he was only interested in protecting himself.

"When I was on speaking terms with ol' Pat McQuaid many, many months ago I said, 'Pat, you better think bold here. A full-blown, global, TRC is our sport's best solution,'" Armstrong said. "He wanted to hear nothing of it."

The UCI and WADA have been engaged in a war of words over how to deal with the fallout from the Armstrong scandal. WADA called the UCI "deceitful" Tuesday for shutting down its independent doping panel and said it won't participate in an amnesty commission set up by the cycling body.

The UCI independent panel was created to look into claims in the USADA report that cycling leaders helped cover up Armstrong's suspicious doping tests and improperly accepted $125,000 in donations from him.

In the Cyclingnews interview, Armstrong said a truth and reconciliation commission should provide a complete amnesty.

"Of course, otherwise no one will show up," he said. "No one."

Asked if he hopes to get his life ban reduced if he testifies to WADA, Armstrong said that was irrelevant.

"What is relevant is that everyone is treated equally and fairly," he said. "We all made the mess, let's all fix the mess, and let's all be punished equally."

Armstrong was asked about USADA chief executive Travis Tygart's statements that the rider was only hoping to restore his eligibility.

"That was Travis' stunt to make me look self-serving," Armstrong said, reiterating his claim that it was unfair that riders who testified against him received reduced sanctions while he was given a life ban.

"Letting some race the season, then giving minor off-seasons sanctions versus the death penalty isn't fair and isn't about 'cleaning up cycling,'" he said. "It's about getting your man."

Armstrong was asked whether he protected Italian doctor Michele Ferrari in his confession. Ferrari, who has been accused of masterminding Armstrong's doping regimen, has also been banned for life from the sport.

"I wasn't 'protecting' anyone," Armstrong said. "I was there to speak about myself, my experiences, and my mistakes. No one else. I know that goes against what we have grown used to in the last few years in cycling but I'm only interested in owning up to my mistakes. I'm a big boy and I'm not in the blame game."

Asked when he realized that doping was rife in cycling, Armstrong said his generation was no different than any others.

"The 'help' has evolved over the years but the fact remains that our sport is damn hard, the Tour was invented as a stunt, and very tough (riders) have competed for a century and all looked for advantages, from hopping on trains 100 years ago to EPO now," he said.

"No generation was exempt or 'clean.' Not Merckx's, not Hinault's, not LeMond's, not Coppi's, not Gimondi's, not Indurain's, not Anquetil's, not Bartali's, and not mine."

How Kari Feinstein Gets Brands To Pay $40 - Business Insider

WireImage

Kari Feinstein at her style lounge at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Sundance Film Festival wrapped up this weekend and not only did many films come out with distributors, but celebrities walked away with a boat-load of free swag.

Stars who attended this year's festival???whether to promote a film like Naomi Watts or to party like Paris Hilton???received free trips to the Caribbean, beauty products, electric bicycles, flat screen TVs, Samsung tablets, head phones, jewelry, winter jackets and more.

We spoke with Kari Feinstein, founder of Kari Feinstein PR, who puts on elite annual gifting suites for Sundance,?Golden Globes, Oscars, MTV Movie Awards and the Emmys to find out exactly what it takes to pair A-list talent with quality brands.

Business Insider: This is your 12th year doing a gifting suite at Sundance. Tell us your company's role in getting certain brands into the hands of celebrities.?

Kari Feinstein:?I do gifting suites year round, I do them five to six times a year so product seeding is a core part of my business for my retainer clients and celebrity endorsement deals but then we also do the style lounges.?

BI:?How do you choose your clients? How do you get certain brands involved?

KF:?We have sponsorship decks that, because we do these all year round, we have brands asking me what do you have for the Summer? What do you have for Sundance? So I have a lot of people that reach out to me. I work with a lot of other PR companies and I work with some advertising agencies as well that have clients, but we go out to companies that we think would be a good fit, and we also have people that come to us and want to sign up for the events.

Kari Feinstein?s Style Lounge

Matthew McConaughey took home Built's water proof food and gadget containers from this year's Kari Feinstein style lounge at Sundance.

BI:?What brands did you work with this year at Sundance?

KF:?Built, they're out of New York, they're one of our bigger sponsors and they make laptop cases and iPad cases, all out of?waterproof material. It protects all of your electronics and that?s been a big hit because everyone has an iPad and a laptop. Then we have a handful of beauty lines, a bicycle worth $3,000, and $1,200 Apple laptops from Melrose Mac, which got like 10 press hits already over the past two days.

BI: How many trips to the Caribbean did you give away at Sundance?

KF:?We?ve probably given away 25 trips.?Katherine Heigl, Matthew Mcconaughey, Paris Hilton, Adrian Grenier, Allison Janey, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Casey Affleck are among the stars we gave vacation packages to this year.

Getty Images Collection

Naomi Watts walked away from Sundance with a free Samsung tablet.

BI: Can you put a dollar amount on the cost of free swag celebrities walk away with in one visit?

KF:?An A-list celebrity will walk out with over $10,000 for sure, because they're getting trips to the Caribbean for a week, which is already?

worth over $5,000. They're getting Apple laptops which are worth $1,200 dollars. From bikes we're giving to top talent worth $3,000 to high ticket items, because you need to have things that entice them.?

BI:?Are there any celebrities you don't want in the suite??

Fingerprint PR

Paris Hilton didn't have a movie at Sundance, but the party girl still walked away with tons of free swag including this Element Electronics flat screen TV from the Paige Hospitality Suite.

KF: Usually a?publicist will submit names. We deal with all the publicists and agents and managers before the event and invites go out saying please submit your client for our upcoming event, so they know it's not 'invite your client' it's 'submit your client.' We do the filtering process and start approving names that make sense. There is a lot of up and coming talent at Sundance that aren?t exactly household names, but if they're one of the leads in one of the main films then of course we?d love to have them come.

But there?s some people that come up to Sundance every year that aren?t really related to the festival in anyway but just come for the free stuff. I usually try to avoid them and decline and we say ?unfortunately we can?t accommodate your client at this time????we do that a lot. If you?re a main role in a Sundance film or if you're an A-list actor then I would rather have quality versus quantity. I know there?s a lot of other lounges going on which is kind of like a party atmosphere, but ours is a fun, mellow, atmosphere. It's like a lounge so I try to be really specific with the guest list.?

BI: How exclusive and hard is it for a brand to get a spot in one of these gifting suites?

KF: If it?s a brand I think celebrities would like, then I take them into the event. But we have a range, from trips to the Caribbean to these hemp socks that have marijuana leaves on them.

Us Weekly

If a Kardashian leaves a suite with swag, the product has a much better chance of being featured in magazines like US Weekly.

BI:?Other than obviously these brands getting great press from you guys is there any financial benefit or is it strictly press they're after??

KF:?A lot of the celebrity photos get utilized for sale purposes, like when brands have trade shows. Brands also send the photos and press hits to all of their existing accounts and potential new accounts. I?ve had many sponsors open new accounts now that they have a celebrity following.

US Weekly, for example, won?t write about your brand unless you have a handful of A-list celebrity photos and followers. So when somebody can go back and say, 'Here?s my picture of Matthew Mcconaughey using my brand, and Katherine Heigl' and they get placed in US weekly???Those press hits generate tons of sales. And we have celebrities tweeting and instagramming pictures. Jewelry by Veronique had a celebrity [Kourtney Kardashian] take a picture of somebody wearing her necklace and in one day this small brand did over five thousand dollars in sales.

Paris Hilton tweeted a picture using one of the beauty products from the Sundance lounge before she went to bed and that?s kind of priceless. If sponsors wanted to pay her to do that it would of cost them over six or seven figures, but they paid $20,000 to be here and things are coming out every hour. So it's actually saving companies money for product placement.

BI: So sponsors pay you to put their product in your gifting suite? What is that investment usually worth?

KI: Yes, they pay me.?For Sundance, the sponsorships range from $20,000 to $100,000, but I would say the majority of our sponsors pay between the $20 - $40,000 range.

BusinessInsider/Aly Weisman

Brands like Moet Champagne pay a lot to be featured at celebrity events and gifting suites throughout the year.

BI: Is it the same price range at other gifting suites throughout the year?

KF: For L.A. events such as the Golden Globes and Oscars, it ranges from $5,000 to $40,000. So some smaller brands can do the $5,000 level, while some bigger brands that have bigger budgets want to be exclusive in their brand category with types of brands that are like them. They want a bigger a booth at the event, so they?ll pay the $20,000 and up as a sponsorship fee.

For Oscars it starts at $5,000 and goes to $40,000. So if I have 20 sponsors paying a range of those fees there?s a nice profit for me. I think why I?ve been in business so long doing this is because I have a consistent good celebrity turnout and press coverage keeps it going and helps sign new sponsors. When other companies read about my event they want to sign up for the next one. And what is really key for me is having the right celebrities and the right press coverage.?

Julie Zeveloff/Business Insider

Gifting suites at the Oscars feature more high end products like diamond jewelry.

BI: When you do an Oscar lounge, that?s the biggest entertainment event of the year, what?s the difference between the product brands are giving out there and at the more low key Sundance Film Festival?

KF:?Oscars we?ll have a lot more jewelry, fine diamonds. We have a company that?s doing cutlery that?s very expensive, but we do still have lifestyle and fun grabs there too.

BI: How does your company benefit financially??

KF:?The sponsorship fees help pay for the cost of the venue, the production of the event, my staff, and so we obviously have to make sure for each event we bring enough sponsorship money to cover all the costs and make it worthwhile.?

BI:?What?s your background? How did you get into gift lounges?

KF: My first job was at CAA,. It was a big talent agency and I worked for two agents who repped a lot of A-list celebrities and I made a lot of connections and contacts that way. Then I started a PR company when I was 23-years-old and our first client was E! Entertainment and they hired me to do their event at Sundance and we did all the product placement and celebrity outreach and we did a gift bag sort of thing and we got photos of celebrities taken with the product and there wasn?t gifting suites at the time.

Feinstein started her career by setting up gifting suites in L.A.'s Chateau Marmont hotel during awards season.

I decided that for the Emmys, I would do a gifting suite on a large scale because so many brands were so excited when I sent them those photos of celebrities using their product. The only gifting suites that were happening were maybe two brands at a hotel room displaying fine jewelry brand and a dress company for the red carpet and it was mostly stylists coming through and a celebrity here or there to look at the dresses but it was all for borrow, for loan.

So what I did in 2001 was take over a few bungalows at the Chateau Marmont and brought in 15-20 companies. It was the first time there were ever gifting suites on a bigger scale, so it spiraled from there. Some other companies came up that replicated what I was doing???some were successful and some were not and they?ve kind of disappeared through the years.

Tornado watch, flash-flood warning issued for region

A tornado watch and flash flood warning are in effect for the Baltimore region, with heavy rain and gusty winds expected through the night.

The tornado watch area includes all of central and southern Maryland and is effective through 2 a.m. Thursday. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornado development but does not mean any have or will occur.

The Baltimore area is also under a flash-flood warning, coastal flood advisory and a wind advisory through early Thursday. Winds are expected from the south at 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 45-50 mph. Winds will shift to become westerly overnight.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Howard County, northern Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and southwestern Baltimore County until 8:30 p.m.

Flooding and damaging wind gusts are a concern overnight, according to the National Weather Service's Baltimore/Washington forecast office. A cold front is causing the storms as it moves into unusually mild and moist air for January. Downtown Baltimore reached 73 degrees and BWI Marshall Airport reached 70 degrees by 3 p.m.

The weather service advises people to quickly move to higher ground if they see flooding and cautions against driving in areas where water covers the road, as most flash-flood deaths involve cars.

According to the Storm Prediction Center in College Park, hail up to half an inch in diameter, wind gusts to 75 mph and lightning are possible across the area if storms turn severe.

But local forecasters in the weather service's Baltimore/Washington office did not expect severe weather in earlier forecasts.

The cold front was still over Indiana on Wednesday afternoon, and when it reaches Maryland overnight could bring storms. Though they might not include thunder and lightning, damaging wind gusts and downpours are expected, according to forecast discussions.

The National Weather Service said tornadoes touched down in Sardis, Miss., and heavily damaged homes in Solsberry, Ind., wiping out power in the surrounding areas on Wednesday morning. At least one tornado was reported in the mid-section of Tennessee. In north Nashville, a man died when a tree fell on his garage apartment, according to Jeremy Heidt, spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.

Tornado watches extended from Mobile, Ala., across much of northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee into southeastern Virginia.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. is readying for possible storm-related outages. Customers are asked to report outages from mobile phones and devices through the mobile website at bge.com or by calling (877) 778-2222.

?Rain, combined with high wind and wind gusts, can weaken trees, bringing whole trees and tree limbs down onto power lines and other electric delivery equipment, and cause outages," Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE, said in a statement.

Local meteorologist "Eric the Red" writes that "the heavy-duty storms" forming closer to the cold front are not expected until after 10 p.m. in the Baltimore area.

Reuters contributed to this report. Have a weather question? E-mail me at sdance@baltsun.com or tweet to @MdWeather.

Satellite Spies Severe Weather Brewing

After an Arctic blast left much of the United States out in the cold, a new system is bringing the threat of severe weather to the central portions of the country this evening and through the night. A satellite snapped an image of the system earlier this morning (Jan. 29).

The National Weather Service's (NWS) Storm Prediction Center, located in Norman, Okla., has forecast severe thunderstorms, with damaging winds and hail ? and possibly even tornadoes ? for the lower Ohio Valley, the mid-South and the lower Mississippi Valley. The SPC says the threat will increase through the night, with squall lines (or long lines of thunderstorms) and individual storms rolling through along with a cold front.

Nighttime storms and tornadoes can be particularly deadly, as people tend to be in bed and unaware of warnings and the storms are harder to see as they bear down. A 2008 study in the American Meteorological Society's journal Weather and Forecasting found that nighttime tornadoes were 2.5 times as likely to cause a death as those that occurred in the daytime. The threat of deadly nighttime tornadoes is exacerbated in the winter with the season's shorter daylight hours. [5 Deadliest Tornado Years in U.S. History]

Tennessee leads the nation in the proportion of nighttime tornadoes it sees, with nearly half of the twisters in its borders striking after dark. Western Tennessee is one of the places that could see severe weather in this latest bout, along with most of Arkansas, and parts of Louisiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Illinois, Indiana and Oklahoma.

The National Weather Service has issued several tornado watches and severe storm warnings and alerted residents to the possibility of large hail and high winds, as well as lightning strikes. The Weather Channel reported on its Twitter account that as of 2 p.m. ET, 24 severe weather reports, 10 severe wind reports, 14 hail reports and no tornado reports had been made. It also reported unconfirmed reports of a funnel cloud to the west of Jefferson City, Mo.

The GOES East satellite (run by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the parent organization of the NWS), snapped an image of the cold front and accompanying stormy conditions at 10:15 a.m. ET.

The cold front will sweep eastward on Wednesday and could bring severe weather to parts of the East Coast, from the Gulf Coast northward. By Wednesday evening, it could impact Washington, D.C., and New York City.

Stocks edge higher, pushing Dow toward 14,000

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks edged higher on Wall Street, pushing the Dow toward 14,000, as investors digested the latest round of earnings and economic reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 57 points to 13,939 points as of noon EST. The Standard and Poor's 500 rose five points to 1,505 points. The Nasdaq composite dropped less than a point to 3,153.

Stocks are approaching record levels after a January rally that has pushed the Dow 6.2 percent higher this month and the S&P 500 up 5.3 percent, its highest level since December 2007. Demand was bolstered after lawmakers reached a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" at the start of the year and by reports that have added to evidence showing that the U.S. housing market is recovering and the jobs market is slowly healing.

Homebuilder D.R. Horton gained $2.04 to $23.35 after it said that net income more than doubled as the housing recovery took hold. Improving home prices and better sales bolstered profits. Drugmaker Pfizer rose 83 cents to $27.67 after the company said its fourth-quarter profit more than quadrupled because of a $4.8 billion gain from selling its nutrition business, despite competition from generic drugs hurting sales.

Investor optimism was checked by a report that showed U.S. consumer confidence sank in January to the lowest level in more than a year as Americans fretted about the economic outlook and higher Social Security taxes. The Conference Board said that its consumer confidence index dropped to 58.6 in January, down from a reading of 66.7 in December.

Stocks also failed to get much of a lift from a report published before the market opened that showed the U.S. housing market is sustaining its recovery.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index rose 5.5 percent in November compared with the same month a year ago, pushed higher by rising sales and a tighter supply of available homes.

"The turnaround in the housing market is for real," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, who says the decline in consumer confidence will likely prove to be temporary as home prices rise. He predicts that the S&P 500 may climb as high as 1,575 this quarter as investor optimism about the economic recovery grows.

The Federal Reserve starts a two-day meeting Tuesday. Investors will also be looking at the release of their statement Wednesday for clues about the outlook for the economy and interest rates.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose by 1 basis point to 1.97 percentage points. The yield on the note, which moves inversely to its price, rose briefly above 2 percent for the first time since April during trading Monday.

Other stocks in the news;

? Ford fell 81 cents to $12.97 despite reporting earnings that beat analysts' estimates. The automaker said that its losses in Europe would be bigger than it had previously forecast. The company's stock has advanced 56 percent in the last six months.

? Seagate Technology, which makes hard disk drives for storage, fell $3.25 to $34.16 after it reported a 13 percent drop in profits as expenses outpaced revenue growth.

? Software company VMware fell $20.05 to $78.27 after it said that it late Monday that it expects first-quarter revenue to come in lower than Wall Street analysts had forecast. The company is also cutting 900 jobs, or about 7 percent of its workforce.

  • In early June, Google will reveal 90 regional finalists (30 from the Americas, 30 from Asia Pacific and 30 from Europe/Middle East/Africa) -- including students from Brazil for the first time.
  • In late June, judges will pick the top 15 finalists.
  • The finalists will be flown to Google HQ in Mountain View, Calif. for the finale event, scheduled for September 23, 2013, which is a bit later than the mid-summer dates in the last two years.

Leading up to the event, Google will be hosting tri-weekly Hangouts. With a focus on science and discovery, topics will range from talks with bright minds such as inventor Dean Kamen and oceanographic explorer Fabien Cousteau to "exclusive" behind-the-scenes tours of labs and science facilities.

According to the Internet giant, it has grown to become "the largest online science fair in the world," with students between the ages of 13 and 18 from more than 90 countries.

Some of the projects that have been entered (and later won) range from a device that converts sound into tactile vibrations to a cloud service running on the Google App Engine to catalog potentially cancerous masts.

For more information about the 2013 Google Science Fair, check out the event page, which launches today.

Environmental Extremists + ATF = Total Ammunition Ban

Environmental Extremists? Lead Bullet Ban + ATF?s ?Armor Piercing? Ammo Ban = Total Ammunition Ban.

Ammunition Bans

Ammunition Bans

CalGunLaws.com

San Diego, CA --(Ammoland.com)- There are two more regulatory storm fronts moving in that may make it difficult or impossible to get the ammunition that firearm owners need to defend themselves and their families, and to engage in the shooting sports.

The uncoordinated attacks come separately from neo-enviro groups and from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. But taken together, these two separate proposals from these two separate groups create a perfect storm that could potentially result in an absolute ban on almost all ammunition.

How?
The extremist environmental groups are trying to ban lead ammunition. Federal law already bans the use of lead ammunition to take water fowl, but these groups will not be satisfied until all lead ammunition use is prohibited. They claim that the minuscule levels of lead introduced into the environment by hunters causes harm to persons and wildlife (most notably the California condor). This junk science resulted in the state legislature passing a ban on lead ammunition in central California. Not content with leaving ammunition banned within California borders, the groups have expanded their push to ban lead ammunition into other states and at the federal level.

The groups pushing for bans on lead ammunition argue that there are less toxic substances than lead available to make bullets. In making this push they suggest that ammunition should be made from alternate materials such as tungsten alloys, bismuth, steel, iron, brass, copper or bronze instead of lead.

Meanwhile, the second front against ammunition comes from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and stems from its attempts to determine whether certain types of ammunition are ?armor piercing? under the law.

The problem??Many, if not all of?the alternate metals that the neo-enviros want the bullets to be made from can fall under the ?armor piercing? ammunition definition due to the hardness of the ?green? non-lead metals.

ATF is also reviewing what types of ammunition is ?primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes.? ATF could use that determination to ban any ammunition that isn?t suitable for sporting purposes.

What is suitable for sporting purposes? Lead ammunition, the very ammunition that the neo-enviros want to ban.

Ammunition consumers are caught in the middle between the neo-enviros push to ban lead ammunition, and the ATF?s pending re-characterization of ?armor piercing? ammunition and ammunition not for ?sporing purposes? to mean all non-lead ammunition. If both sides get their way, there could be nothing left.

(AP) ? There will be a winner and a loser every Super Bowl Sunday. But at the "Puppy Bowl," it's always a win for animal shelters.

The show provides national exposure to the shelters across the country that provide the puppy athletes and the kittens that star in the halftime show, and introduces viewers to the different breeds and animals that need homes, animal workers say. Many shelters see bumps in visits from viewers who are inspired to adopt a pet.

"It raises awareness for our shelter and others that take part," said Madeline Bernstein, president and CEO of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles. "It shows dogs in a happy, playful, fun way, which makes people think, 'Gee, I could play with a dog too.' You hope it will also stimulate adoptions, and if not, at least a positive attitude toward dogs, rather than they are just hairy and smelly."

The "Puppy Bowl," an annual two-hour TV special that mimics a football game with canine players, made its debut eight years ago on The Animal Planet. Dogs score touchdowns on a 10-by-19-foot gridiron carpet when they cross the goal line with a toy. There is a Most Valuable Pup award, a water bowl cam, a new lipstick cam (it's in the lips of the toys), slow-motion cameras, hedgehog referees, a puppy hot tub and a blimp with a crew of hamsters. Bios on each puppy player flash across the screen during close-ups of the action, letting viewers know how to find each animal for adoption.

Most of the puppies, however, are usually adopted by airtime since the show is filmed months ahead, said executive producer Melinda Toporoff, who is working on her fifth "Puppy Bowl." But Bernstein said the point is to show that animals just like the ones on the show can be found at any shelter at any time.

"A lot of people have come in during the last year and said, 'I want a dog just like Fumble,'" she said, referring to spcaLA's player entry in "Puppy Bowl VIII" who earned the game's Most Valuable Pup crown.

About 300 puppies and kittens have been featured on "Puppy Bowl" over the last decade, according to Petfinder.com, the country's largest online pet adoption database that helps cast the show's animal stars.

"Shelters and rescues are at capacity, and pet adoption is the responsible way to add to your family," said Sara Kent, who oversees outreach to the 14,000 shelters and rescues that Petfinder works with.

The inaugural "Puppy Bowl," which was promoted as an alternative to the Super Bowl, had 22 puppies and was watched by nearly 6 million viewers. Nearly 9 million tuned in last year and another 1.4 million watched via video streams, Toporoff said. "Puppy Bowl IX" will feature 84 animals, including 21 kittens from a New York shelter for the halftime show, and 63 puppies from 23 shelters.

Only four of the puppies have yet to find new homes, Toporoff said. They include Tyson, Daphne and Sacha ? three pit bull mixes from the Pitter Patter Animal Rescue in Silver Lake, Wis., ? and Jenny, a terrier mix from the Pitty Love Rescue in Rochester, N.Y.

"I don't know if there's any bigger forum for getting something out on adoption. We make sure the message gets out there. We make clear that these dogs need homes and that all animals have come to us during the adoption process," Toporoff said.

Fumble, last year's MVP winner, was adopted before the show aired. Michael Wright, of New York, said he found out about Fumble's participation toward the end of the adoption process. He planned to watch this year's show to catch any flashbacks of last year's MVP playing his heart out.

"I'm not really a fan of football," he said, adding that he has renamed Fumble to Toby. "He fits the name Toby. He is so cute. I like the name Fumble, but I pictured someone dropping the ball. He wasn't a Fumble," Wright said.

Each year, recruiting for the show is a logistical challenge for Kent and her crew of 80-plus. This year's show was particularly worrisome because taping was scheduled for October 2012 ? just after Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.

"We worried about the puppies, kittens and hedgehogs that may have been directly impacted or unable to travel due to Sandy," Kent said.

The New York studio where the game was supposed to be taped lost power, but the taping couldn't be postponed for too long given how quickly puppies grow. Another studio further uptown that had both power and space was found, and "amazingly, the crew was able to reschedule the shoot for only a week later and all the animals were still able to attend," Kent said.

Bernstein said they try to find rambunctious, energetic puppies to enter in the bowl though even if a dog falls asleep on its way to the end zone, it can be funny. Puppies chosen for the show have to be between 10 and 15 weeks old, healthy and sturdy enough to be on the field with playmates. All breeds are considered because "we try to reflect what's out there in the adoption world. A lot of those breeds are mixed," Toporoff said.

Producers also were trying to find ways to incorporate older animals into the show, since shelters have more trouble finding homes for them than they do puppies and kittens, Toporoff said.

As with all reality TV shows, the behind-the-scenes casting can lead to problems. Viewers often come in seeking a dog just like one on the show, and "then the lawyer brain kicks in, and you have to make sure you let everybody know not every dog plays football," said Bernstein, who is also an attorney. "People will adopt the kind of dog they see in the movie and they'll expect their Dalmatian to know how to use a word processor and not understand that was a cartoon."

"Some dogs like to play more than others. But don't come in thinking every Chihuahua can play football," she said.

The "Puppy Bowl" airs on Feb. 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in all time zones and will keep repeating until 3 a.m. The Super Bowl starts at 6:30 p.m. ET and 3:30 p.m. PT.

As Android rises, Asia's trend-setters feel iPhone fatigue

9 hrs.

SINGAPORE?? Apple's iconic iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia's well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics, eating into Apple's market share.

In Singapore, Apple's products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore ? iPad and iPhone ? declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

"Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer," said Tom Clayton, chief executive of Singapore-based Bubble Motion, which develops a popular regional social media app called Bubbly.

Leading indicators
Where Hong Kong and Singapore lead, other key markets across fast-growing Asia usually follow.

"Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region," said Jim Wagstaff, who runs a Singapore-based company called Jam Factory?that's developing mobile apps for enterprises.

Southeast Asia is adopting smartphones fast ? consumers spent 78 percent more on smartphones in the 12 months up to September 2012 than they did the year before, according to research company GfK.

Android rising
Anecdotal evidence of iPhone fatigue isn't hard to find: Where a year ago iPhones swamped other devices on the subways of Hong Kong and Singapore, they are now outnumbered by Samsung and HTC smartphones.

While this is partly explained by the proliferation of Android devices, from the cheap to the fancy, there are other signs that Apple has lost followers.

Singapore entrepreneur Aileen Sim recently launched an app for splitting bills called BillPin, settling on an iOS version because that was the dominant platform in the three countries she was targeting ? Singapore, India and the United States.

"But what surprised us was how strong the call for Android was when we launched our app," she said.

Indeed, 70 percent of their target users ? 20-something college students and fresh graduates ? said they were either already on Android or planned to switch over.

"Android is becoming really hard to ignore, around the region and in the U.S. for sure, but surprisingly even in Singapore," she said. "Even my younger early-20s cousins are mostly on Android now."

BillPin launched an Android version this month.

Standing out from the crowd
Napoleon Biggs, chief strategy officer at Gravitas Group, a Hong Kong-based mobile marketing company, said that while Apple and the iPhone remained premium brands there, Samsung's promotional efforts were playing to an increasingly receptive audience.

For some, it is a matter of wanting to stand out from the iPhone-carrying crowd. Others find the higher-powered, bigger-screened Android devices better suited to their changing habits ? watching video, writing Chinese characters ? while the cost of switching devices is lower than they expected, given that most popular social and gaming apps are available for both platforms.

"Hong Kong is a very fickle place," Biggs said.

Janet Chan, a 25-year-old Hong Kong advertising executive, has an iPhone 5, ?but its fast-draining battery and the appeal of a bigger screen for watching movies is prodding her to switch to a Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"After Steve Jobs died, it seems the element of surprise in product launches isn't that great anymore," she said.

Shifting trends
To be sure, there are still plenty of people buying Apple devices. Stores selling their products in places such as Indonesia were full over the Christmas holidays, and the company's new official store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has queues snaking out of the door most days.

But the iPhone's drop in popularity in trendy Hong Kong and Singapore is mirrored in the upmarket malls of the region.

"IPhones are like Louis Vuitton handbags," said marketing manager Narisara Konglua in Bangkok, who uses a Galaxy SIII. "It's become so commonplace to see people with iPads and iPhones so you lose your cool edge having one."

In the Indonesian capital Jakarta, an assistant manager at Coca Cola's local venture, Gatot Hadipratomo, agrees. The iPhone "used to be a cool gadget, but now more and more people use it," Hadipratomo said.

There is another influence at play: hip Korea. Korean pop music, movies and TV are hugely popular around the region, and Samsung is riding that wave. And while the impact is more visible in Hong Kong and Singapore, it also translates directly to places like Thailand.

"Thais are not very brand-loyal," says Akkaradert Bumrungmuang, 24, a student at Mahidol University in Bangkok. "That's why whatever is hot or the in-thing to have is adopted quickly here. We follow Korea, so whatever is fashionable in Korea will be a big hit."

This report was written by Jeremy Wagstaff in Singapore, with additional reporting by Lee Chyen Yee in Hong Kong, Khettiya Jittapong and Amy Sawitta Lefevre in Bangkok, and Andjarsari Paramaditha in Jakarta.

(AP) ? When Syrian warplanes bombed a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus last December, Umm Sami rounded up her three sons, shut the windows and locked the doors so they could neither hear nor heed the call to arms by rebels and pro-government gunmen fighting in the streets.

Then she told her sons they were leaving their home in the Yarmouk refugee camp in the Syrian capital for neighboring Lebanon, where they would wait out Syria's civil war.

"There will be no more martyrs for Palestine in my family," Umm Sami said, who only gave her nickname for fear of reprisals. "This war is a Syrian problem."

Now safe in Lebanon, the 45-year-old widow and her family have joined thousands of other Palestinian refugees who have found shelter in the country since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad erupted nearly two years ago. The conflict has left more than 2 million people internally displaced, and pushed 650,000 more to seek refuge abroad.

Umm Sami's resolve to keep her sons out of the fight in Syria ties into a deep-rooted sentiment among a generation of Palestinian refugees who say they are fed up with being dragged into the region's conflicts on a promise of getting their own state.

The Palestinian exodus from Syria has also revived a decades-old debate over the refugees' right of return to their homes that are now in Israel. That has added another layer of complexity to a conflict already loaded with sectarian and ethnic overtones that have spilled over into neighboring countries, raising fears of a regional war.

Palestinians living in Arab countries ? including the half-million refugees in Syria ? are descendants of the hundreds of thousands who fled or were driven from their homes in the war that followed Israel's creation in 1948. Having scattered across the Middle East since then, Palestinians consistently have found themselves in the middle of the region's conflicts.

After the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq toppled Saddam Hussein, hundreds of Palestinians were killed as the Sunni and Shiite militias fought for dominance of the country. Iraq's Shiite majority saw Saddam, who like most Palestinians was a Sunni Muslim, as a patron of the stateless Palestinians, granting them rights the dictator denied his own citizens because they were of the rival sect.

About 1,000 Palestinians fled the 2004-07 sectarian bloodshed in Baghdad, living in a refugee camp near the Syrian border before being resettled in third countries.

During Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, Palestinians played a major role, fighting alongside Muslim militiamen against Christian forces.

Umm Sami, who was born in a refugee camp in Lebanon before the war, was twice forced to flee the fighting, most notably in 1982 when her family escaped the Sabra and Chatilla camps during the notorious massacre of Palestinians there by Christian militias.

She would eventually bury her father, two brothers and her husband ? all fallen fighters ? before leaving for Syria and settling with her four sons in Yarmouk, one of nine Palestinian camps in Syria.

Her youngest son died in a traffic accident while serving in the Palestinian unit of the Syrian army just weeks before the anti-Assad revolt started in March 2011. None of her other sons joined the revolution, she said, because "they don't want to die."

Unlike in Lebanon, where Palestinians are cramped into notoriously lawless camps, banned from all but the most menial professions and barred from owning property, Palestinians in Syria are well integrated and enjoy full citizenship rights, except for the right to vote.

But when the uprising against Assad erupted in the southern province of Daraa in March 2011, some Palestinians living in a camp there joined in the peaceful protests. When the fighting spread to the northern city of Aleppo in last summer, some took up arms against the regime.

In Damascus, most stayed on the sidelines, but as the civil war reached Yarmouk late last year, a densely populated residential area just 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the heart of the capital, most residents backed the rebels. Some groups, however, such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, opted to fight alongside Assad's troops.

Palestinian officials say more than 700 Palestinians have been killed in the Yarmouk fighting. Most of the camp's 150,000 inhabitants have fled, according to the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees. Some of them have found safe haven in areas of Damascus and other Syrian cities, but most have escaped to camps in Lebanon.

"We go from catastrophe to catastrophe, from refugee camp to refugee camp, but at least we are alive," Umm Sami said in Ein el-Hilweh, Lebanon's largest Palestinian refugee camp, near the southern port city of Sidon. She and her sons, who are all in their 20s and university graduates, fled Yarmouk with only the clothes on their backs, leaving behind a two-bedroom apartment and jobs that paid the bills.

Now, they are jobless in Lebanon, officially barred from legal employment, and left to live off help from relatives and handouts from the camp's mosques.

Ein en-Hilweh normally houses 65,000 people, but since mid-December, when a flood of refugees from Yarmouk started arriving, the population has steadily grown by several hundred a day, putting a further strain on resources.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he asked U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon last month to seek Israeli permission to bring Palestinians caught in Syria's civil war to their homeland. Last week, he said that Israel agreed to allow 150,000 Palestinians refugees from Syrian into the West Bank and Gaza ? as long as they relinquished the right of return to what is now Israel. Abbas said he refused.

With no end to the Syria conflict in sight, residents of Ein el-Hilweh have started building a camp within a refugee camp for their compatriots escaping the violence across the border.

They've converted the camp's children's library into housing for dozens of families. Reading rooms, offices, hallways and even bathrooms have been partitioned with makeshift walls, boards and even blankets as families try to carve out space to cook, eat and sleep.

In the library's front yard, a new structure is being built to house at least 10 more families.

"We do what we can to help and find them a home, because they are not going back to Syria soon," said Sheik Jamal Khatab, who oversees the registration of refugees and distribution of aid.

The biggest challenge facing the Palestinian refugees, Khatab said, is not to be dragged into the Syrian civil war ? on either side. He also warned that the hardship awaiting Palestinians after the war ends will be tougher than the one they have been living as stateless people.

"It's in our interest not to interfere in this conflict, even though the Syrian regime is a tyrannical regime," he said. "We are not Syrians, and any side that will win this war will consider us enemies."

You Can Make Web Page Hosting Work For You! | Website Design ...

TIPS! Be cautious of scammers and hidden fees. A lot of cheap services come with extra hidden fees.

A reliable web host is sometimes hard to come by, particularly if you have multiple needs. Due to the large selection of web hosting companies, it can be difficult to select the best one. Use the information this article provides to help you make an informed decision.

TIPS! Before signing up for a hosting account, peruse the host?s website. A good website should be filled with resources on the different features you will have to learn to use to optimize your site.

Check the amount of maintenance time when the web hosting site has been down. If you intend on using your website to conduct business, downtime is a big problem for your profit margin. Anytime there is downtime, you will not be able to access your account.

TIPS! To maximize your profits for your website, look closely at the web hosting companies that are vying for your business. Rates can range from $2 to $60 per month ? and it?s often the cheaper models that are the most reliable.

There are a few hosting services that will generate a refund for you to offset site downtime. In general, you need to be refunded for sales you couldn?t obtain because of downtime. Make sure that you find a host that has a good uptime instead of looking at the refund policy.

TIPS! Find out more about the background of a web hosting service before purchasing a plan. Don?t take their word for impossible claims without reading lots of customer reviews.

Be sure to compare plans before you sign up for service with a web page hosting company, be sure of what you are actually getting for your money. Web hosts have a variety of packages that include different options for different prices. Always make sure you find out precisely what is offered in the package before you decide to get it. This way you know exactly what you are in for, and you can make sure you get exactly what you need.

TIPS! Carefully review your potential host?s website. Those who cannot design their website well should not be contacted.

Always scrutinize the reasons a company gives for server outages before picking your hosting provider. Some hosting services could use electrical outages as an excuse, or they could come up with other reasons. However, the great services find methods of keeping your site up and running. Even if your service is cheap, do not let them keep your site offline without a good reason.

TIPS! See if they have hidden cancellation fees. Your web host might show it?s true colors quickly, leading you to want to leave.

When seeking a host provider, learn as much as you can aside from reading the material on the host?s website. Find comparison websites and check out reviews to get a clear picture of the host?s quality of service. Outside reviews from the customers show how good the host?s quality is.

TIPS! Free is good, but a free web hosting provider isn?t always the best choice. Free web hosting services usually require you to display ad banners on your website.

Invest in an SSL certificate for both your and your customers? peace of mind. You can make note of your security certificate on the home page of your site. This tells visitors that they can safely make purchases or provide sensitive information through your site portals.

TIPS! Free web hosting is usually not a good idea. While this price can seem very attractive to a limited budget, you may end up outgrowing the boundaries of your web host.

Many website hosting services rely on the services of larger companies. These companies can buy large server spaces at discounts, and rent them for profit to small sites. Know where your site will be hosted, and be confident you are obtaining the best price between two companies using the same servers.

TIPS! When you are selecting a web host, it is best to pick one that has won multiple hosting awards. This gives you a general idea about the host?s technical support and customer service.

Make a list of priorities prior to choosing a web host. If you have a clear idea of what you want and need, it will be easier to compare your available options. Creating a detailed list also prevents you from rushing into a decision based upon only one feature.

TIPS! It is essential that you read reviews for the web hosts that you are considering for your site. Find out what kind of issues web hosting services have encountered and how they have dealt with these situations.

Go through the forum on the site run by your host or potential host. The forums should have a robust and lively community of users, as it is a great indicator of a well-used host. A lack of comments, or only negative chat, indicates it might be unwise to consider the company.

TIPS! Just because a web host company is free, does not mean you should rule it out entirely. There are, of course, plenty of free hosts that fill your site with unwanted advertising, but there are a few free hosts that don?t require you to display any ads whatsoever.

Before you sign up with a web host, make sure they guarantee your satisfaction. Canceling your service should be your right if you aren?t satisfied with what you signed up for within 30 days. Some web hosts may fail to live up to their advertisements.

TIPS! One important web hosting consideration is the amount of server storage space and monthly bandwidth usage that you will need. Determining this means looking at the page you currently have, and considering what your future business needs might be as well.

If you do not have much experience in web design, pick one of the web hosts that has excellent customer service instead of a lot of other extras. As a beginner, you are sure to run into many problems and have lots of questions that are suited for a provider with a good customer service department. You will benefit more from the technical support than the extra fancy applications that other web hosts may offer.

TIPS! Check out what kind of control panel a potential host offers before you sign up. Ideally, a provider should include options for troubleshooting, customer support and tutorials.
