COMMENTARY | As the Republican Party struggles to find its direction in the aftermath of the 2012 presidential election, the Democratic Party will have to work hard to keep its momentum going. The choice of the candidate who embodies party values and satisfies voter demands is a key component for electoral victory. Who are two likely candidates who may face off in the campaign leading up to the 2016 presidential election?
Republican Governor Chris Christie: An Old Hand at Bipartisanship
Citing the Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll, N.J. reveals that Gov. Christie is "the most favored among likely Republican candidates for the 2016 presidential nomination." A 55-percent spread of voters had a favorable opinion of Christie, which gave him a lead over Florida's U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, who came in with 46 percent.
Citing his actions during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy as one reason for the favorable opinion, the Seattle Times notes that Christie has proven himself capable of building bipartisan rapport even during times of highly contentious campaigning. Bipartisanship will be a major component in the next presidential election, particularly for voters who remember the 2012 fiscal cliff debate, Congress' inability to move and its subsequent 18-percent approval rating Gallup reports on.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: Superior Name Recognition and Political Clout
Democrats will be hard-pressed to find another candidate for the 2016 presidential election who could rival Clinton's name recognition, fundraising ability and political cloud. Granted, the Wall Street Journal notes that she has publicly stated she will not "run for elected office after she leaves the State Department," but when talking with Barbara Walters on ABC News, Clinton noted that "all doors are open" when it comes to future endeavors.
Although Clinton rebuffs speculation about a 2016 run, she does not shy away from hypothetically discussing her age and health as a 77-year-old two-term president. In addition to being in good health and energetic, Clinton also has a firm grip on the digital world, Fox News asserts. Besides interacting internationally online, she has also shown herself to have a good sense of humor with those who would parody her.
