City workers on Monday began clearing a small area of the median gardens along Kellogg Boulevard that had become overgrown by weeds.
The Parks and Recreation crew, as promised, were out Monday morning grooming a portion of the median, which fronts the St. Paul RiverCentre and Xcel Energy Center. By Monday afternoon, a portion near a crosswalk had been cleared, though larger stretches of the median remained untouched.
Parks spokesman Brad Meyer said the weeds would be tended to early this week. More than six workers filled the back of a truck with rooted weeds.
Because of the long and cold winter, Parks and Rec delayed the usual spring weeding, which normally starts in June. And recent rain and warm weather caused fast sprouting weeds to spread, he said.
